South Korea to draw up follow-up measures after second N. Korea-U.S. summit - Duration: 0:43.
South Korea has vowed to do everything it can for the success of next week's summit.
Ranking lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party and senior officials from the government
and Cheongwadae met to discuss the latest developments.
The three sides said the summit needs to result in specific details about how the regime and
the U.S. will implement the promises made at their first meeting in Singapore last year.
Those include... fostering new bilateral relations and building permanent peace on the Korean
Peninsula.
They added that Seoul and Washington are staying in close touch about related developments.
The participants also mentioned that South Korea will take follow-up measures based on

Income disparity widened in 2018 Q4 as employment situation worsens - Duration: 1:58.
Data show income polarization among the haves and have-nots have worsened during the three
months leading up to last December.
This is mainly due to the worsened employment conditions in Korea.
Kim Ji-yeon help us look beyond the numbers.
Income disparity continues to grow in the nation.
According to data released by Statistics Korea on Thursday,...nominal income among households
in the bottom 20-percent income bracket is found to have sharply decreased by nearly
18-percent compared to the same period the previous year... to record 11-thousand U.S.
dollars during the fourth quarter of last year.
That's far less than the national monthly average of nearly 41-thousand dollars.
Meanwhile, monthly income among households in the top 20-percent income bracket rose
by more than 10-percent on-year to record nearly 83-thousand dollars in the fourth quarter
of last year.
Real income, which takes into account inflation rates, as a whole rose for the fifth consecutive
quarter in Q4 last year... by nearly 2-percent compared to that of Q4 of 2017.
The gap in disposable income also widened during the fourth quarter of last year.
Disposable income among the bottom 20-percent income bracket... dropped by more than eight
percent on-year to around 73-hundred dollars... while that of the top 20-percent income bracket
soared by more than nine-percent on-year to record 40-thousand dollars.
"The worsened job situation last year particuarly among temporary employees... is seen as the
main reason for the widening disparty in income."
The official also attributed the sharp income drop among the bottom 20-percent income bracket
to a base effect during the fourth quarter of 2017...when the government's 3-point-7-billion
dollar supplementary budget on job creation took effect.

Seoul's finance chief announced new ways to expand the "win-win type local job" project.
This follows the success of such a model used in Gwangju.
Hong Yoo outlines what they are.
Korea will look for 2 to 3 more regions to apply its "win-win type local jobs" model,
which has already been implemented in Gwangju.
Also known as the Gwangju job project, it comes on the heels of Hyundai Motor's agreement
with the city of Gwangju back in January...to set up a joint venture with the city... and
build a car manufacturing facility.
Manufacturing and service industries located outside the Seoul metropolitan area can be
eligible for this project regardless of their size.
The plan is to create customized jobs by inducing mutual cooperation among local economic players
away from the central government-led employment policy.
The local and central governments will provide various incentives such as subsidies and tax
benefits to participating firms.
Finance Minister Hong Nam-ki said the "win-win type local job" project will be a new breakthrough
to Korea's economy.
Experts and local government officials will deliberate and evaluate new regions where
the model could be implemented.
A detailed manual regarding this new model will be released around early March.

S. Korea's Supreme Court raises work expectancy age to 65 - Duration: 2:00.
South Korea's Supreme Court ruled in a damages lawsuit... that the work expectancy age, or
the legal age cap until which people are presumed physically capable of doing work, is now sixty-five.
That's an increase of five years.
The decision was made to get with the times, considering the country's rapidly aging population.
Choi Si-young explains further.
For thirty years, since 1989, the consensus was that people are physically fit to work
at full capacity until 60.
That's what the Supreme Court said at the time, but it's now raised that to 65.
The court based its decision on changing social and economic conditions.
First, a rise in the average life expectancy.
In 1989, it was 67 for men and 75.3 for women.
By 2017, that had changed to almost eighty and eighty-six, respectively.
Second, the average retirement age was 72 for men, and 72.2 for women from 2011 to 2016.
That's considered high among OECD countries.
Third, employment law says only seniors 65 or older are eligible for governmental assistance
to sustain life,... meaning the government thinks people younger than that can sustain
themselves.
Furthermore, the law says you have to be 65 or older to receive payments from the national
pension, starting from 2033.
The Court went on to say that more seniors are taking part in the country's workforce
overall.
According to Statistics Korea, as of 2017, seniors aged sixty-five and older make up
fourteen percent of the entire workforce.
And in 2016, six out of ten seniors aged sixty to sixty-four had a job.
The case the court ruled on Thursday started in 2015,... when a plaintiff sued a pool company
for the death of their 4-year-old child.
The plaintiff wanted compensation on the assumption that the child would have lived and worked
until the age of 65.
A lower court ruled that it should be 60, but the Supreme Court sided with the plaintiff.

option to provide sanctions relief to Pyeongyang.
The government has high hopes that cross-border exchanges will proceed further after the Hanoi
summit.

Seoul says...
South Korea and the U.S. have discussed inter-Korean economic cooperation as a way to offer sanctions
relief to North Korea... should the regime take concrete steps towards denuclearization.
Cooperation refers to several joint projects by the two Koreas currently held back by the
sanctions -- such as the recent work to connect their railways and roads,... the reopening
of the joint factory park in Gaeseong and South Korean tours to the North's Geumgang-san
mountain.
A senior government official told reporters on Thursday that Seoul and Washington have
discussed this option... because Pyeongyang wants to be able to engage economically with
other countries… and inter-Korean economic cooperation plays a big role in that.
But the official stressed... that clearly relief can come only after Pyeongyang does
something substantial and concrete to denuclearize.
While the Kim-Trump nuclear summit is coming up just next week, the official said that
Seoul has positive expectations for it.
According to him, both Pyeongyang and Washington now have a better understanding of what the
other wants... after their recent exchanges of top nuclear negotiators.
And Seoul is also expecting that its exchanges with Pyeongyang, which are on hold for now,
will be revived once next week's summit is over.
Earlier on Friday, Pyeongyang notified Seoul that it won't be able to hold a joint event
on March 1st to commemorate the movement for Korea's independence from Imperial Japan.
The two Koreas had agreed at their summit last year to celebrate the date together on
the movement's 100th anniversary.
According to Seoul, North Korea explained that it doesn't have enough time to prepare
for the event, meaning it's busy getting ready for the summit with Washington.

Around 400 business leaders and government officials from Korea and India gathered at
a business forum on Thursday to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
"Korea was and still remains our role model of economic growth for me.
Friends, India today, are a country of 1.35 billion people, going through a great transition.
Realizing the Indian dream, we think like like-minded partners."
Like Korea in the past, Prime Minister Modi said India is also undergoing an economic
transformation, moving from agriculture-dominated economy to one led by manufacturing and technology...
becoming the world's sixth largest economy with an annual growth rate of seven percent.
Given India's huge domestic market and improving infrastructure, companies like Samsung Electronics
and Hyundai Motor have not just exported goods to India, but have built factories in the
country in recent years.
According to the Korea Customs Service, bilateral trade hit 21-point-five billion U.S. dollars
in 2018, with Korea exporting 15-point-six billion dollars in 2018, up near 37% from
10 billion dollars in 2010.
At the forum, government officials from the two countries also said they hope to move
beyond manufacturing and boost cooperation in high tech industries and startup innovation.
"India has invested heavily in infrastructure and 700-thousand engineers are produced every
year.
Korea also has talented young people and technological know-how, it will be a win-win situation to
create a startup ecosystem together."
A Korea-India Startup Hub homepage was launched at the forum to share more information and
provide more networking opportunities between the two countries.
Participants at the forum also emphasized the need to amend the two countries' bilateral
comprehensive economic partnership agreement, or CEPA, which went into effect in 2010, to
make more items duty-free and to boost bilateral trade and investment.
Negotiations on a revision have been underway since 2016.
