Youtube daily report Feb 15 2019

Alright guys, we are in Rakusai Park.

This is a bamboo forest and we came here today to explore and learn a little bit more about the bamboo culture.

So, these are the different varieties of bamboo that you can find here.

So, right now we're discussing the plan for tomorrow morning.

Before we indulge in this amazing meal.

We're gonna be very early tomorrow around 6:00 a.m.

So we can catch the presenters or the performers as they get ready.

Should be cool.

Alright guys, today is the official day that Daimyo Gyoretsu,

the parade, starts and I'm really looking forward to it.

We are in Hakone and it's absolutely incredible.

There are so many people around us.

I've been seeing Samurais, I've been seeing Geishas.

There's a lot to look forward to and the food – so much food – and it's free.

Who wouldn't want to be here right now, right?

I know that everyone is here right now so I will go and sneak somewhere else

and find some other spots to shoot.

Come with me.

I think I can hear a waterfall.

Let's see if there is one.

Alright, so I'm choosing a 7 to 14 millimetre, because it's wide enough

to capture the whole scenery, although I'm really close.

I want to shoot that really interesting street right there

with all the advertising and food.

It's really cool.

I think if it gets a little bit darker, you will get a lot more vibrancy in the colours.

It's beginning to rain a little bit, so if the ground is wet...

Photographer's dream, right?

Photographer's dream!

We're at the virtual reality park in Tokyo.

We're going to try some of these simulations.

Have you ever been?

Never.

This is crazy.

Good morning everyone.

You're probably all wondering where we are currently.

We are at Aikido Honbu Dojo.

This is the headquarters of the modern Japanese defensive martial art practice.

We're going to be speaking with the master today

and really dive deep into finding out what this martial art is.

So, sitting with me I have the current Doshu of Aikido Academy here, Moriteru Ueshiba.

Thank you again for having us here.

I have some very simple questions for you that I am sure many of us want to know the answers to.

The first one that comes to my mind is:

In Aikido there are many elements that are related to the Japanese culture

and being that it is a Japanese practice,

how do you think that the culture over time has influenced the way that you go about your practice?

The essence has not changed despite the times changing.

One big pillar of the spirituality of Japan is that we do not confront, but respect others.

Our spirituality is to value others, no matter what happens or how times are changing.

The practice of Aikido is one way to express this.

This is really, really nice.

So, if you get close to the lights,

they light up and then they interact with the other ones.

Supposedly.

Something like that.

Alright guys, so today is very exciting because I have Takuya,

who is the owner of Takuya Angel, which is a Harajuku fashion brand.

He came all the way from Kobe, which we really appreciate, because we are currently in Tokyo.

And I have so many questions to ask him, because fashion is a very important thing to the Japanese people,

but it's also a very important thing for our international community.

And that gets me thinking, where did you draw your inspiration to start your brand?

What was it that initiated that for you?

I like Japanese tradition and also anime and manga,

so I mixed these things in my fashion.

So, I think it was a cumulation of your hobbies that really got you put together and initiated this interest.

I used to have my own store in Harajuku for 10 years from 2000 to 2010

and I used to live in Harajuku as well.

I talked a lot to my customers.

Tokyo is a big city, but Harajuku is basically the only place in the whole city

where you can wear this really extravagant kind of style.

In other places people would point at you and it's more difficult.

Harajuku was the only place where this was possible, so that's why I tried my best there.

The #japanexplorers made their way around various parts of this beautiful country.

And we learned so many new things about the Japanese culture,

the traditions and the values, and we've made our way also through natural

landscapes that had to offer so much.

The G-Classes enabled us to really explore different parts of this country.

And in that process, we captured various

aspects of how beautiful, dynamic and changing this culture is.

So, I hope you guys enjoyed this vlog series.

Be sure to leave your comment.

We'd love to hear your feedback.

Until then, #japanexplorers out, peace.

Top 10 Scary Viking Facts - Duration: 10:32.

Welcome back everyone - its been too long since Ive done a Viking video on this channel

which doesnt make sense because you guys always seem to love them.

Why is that?

I don't blame you, I also love Vikings - theres always something new to learn about them.

Every year, historians peice together a bit more of the Viking picture - its always interesting

- but sometimes its very dark - theres a reason why the Vikings strike fear into the hearts

of people even today - and its because of these facts youre about to hear - my name

is Danny Burke and this is the Top 10 Scary Viking Facts.

Right before we get into that I wanna talk about Vikings: War of Clans.

This game was inspired by the top PC strategy and RPG games of the 90s - it reminds me a

lot of old Age of Empires - its all about building up resources, influence and experience

to crush your opponents.

You can also forge alliances with any of the 20 million online players - these clans can

be the difference between glory and ruin.

Play the game your own way and be prepared for it to constantly evolve as you fight over

resources and compete in live events.

Support Most Amazing Top 10 by downloading Vikings for FREE only from the links in the

description box and get the special bonus of 200 gold coins and a protective shield!

Starting off at number 10 we have Berserkers[a].

These guys are where the word berserk comes from - and for good reason.

They were fierce Viking warriors who worked themselves up into an uncontrollable, trance

like frenzy and made them believe they were invincible.

Wether or not that was true, it was said to be enough for them to not only perform superhuman

feats of strength but also scare their enemies into submission.

Stories describe them as screaming, red faced and even howling.

Before the battle, they would bite at their own and shields and skin - they didnt even

feel the pain because of the state they were in.

Why was this?

Well, its thought they worked themselves up into this hysteria - but others have suggested

it could be drugs, alcohol, a mental disorder or even sorcery.

Whatever it was, their enemies would be running the other way …

Next up at number 9 we have Child Sacrifices[b].

Its well known that a lot of ancient cultures, including the Vikings, sacrificed animals

as part of their religious rituals.

However, a study in 2015 seemed to confirm the rumour that it wasnt just animals that

were being killed.

At the Viking fortress of Trelleborg in Sweden, archaeologists found human and animal skeletons

in 5 water wells, together with jewellery and tools.

They believed the human remains were due to human sacrifice.

If that wasnt enough - they also found that 4 out of 5 of them were young children aged

between 4 and 7.

Its thought that they were killed and thrown in the well due to the importance of wells

in Viking culture.

They believed that the God Odin gained wisdom from drinking at Mimirs well.

In exchange, he had to sacrifice one of his eyes.

As such, these Vikings must have thought that sacrificing a whole human would have brought

untold gifts from the Gods - perhaps even more so if the victim was a child …

Moving on to number 8 we have Slavery[c].

For many years, the topic of Viking slavery was often glossed over or underplayed.

Recently though, studies have suggested that not only did the Vikings keep slaves - they

were ingrained into their very way of life - they had a slave economy.

This wasnt anything new to Scandinavia though - there is evidence of of it dating back to

the first century, before the Vikings.

The Vikings did it on a much bigger scale though.

Writings describe the slave trade in the 10th century as extending across the Mediterranean

from Spain to Egpyt.

Others recorded that slaves were brought to the Viking homelands from as far away as Russia,

Turkey and Iraq.

Over the years, there have been a number of theories about why the Vikings had such a

need for slaves.

Some say it was to produce textiles for their sails, to sacrifice slaves to the gods or,

in the case of female slaves, to make up for a lack of eligible women in the Viking homelands

Next up at number 7 we have Holmgang[d].

Thats the name of this dangerous viking duel that was used to settle disputes.

It started with a challenge - if someone felt they had been dishonored, they had 3 to 7

days to issue a challenge.

The person who had been called out had to show up on the given day - if they didnt,

they brought shame to their entire clan.

The name -Holmgang- can be translated as -to go to a small island- … thats because the

duel would normally place on a cloak or piece of fabric placed on the ground to mark out

the arena.

In the old Holmgangs, it was not uncommon for one of the fighters to be killed in combat.

Because the person was killed due to a Holmgang, no murder charges would be brought about.

The matter was considered settled.

Can you imagine if thats how we all lived today?

I think there would be Holmgangs kicking off every day …

Moving on to number 6 we have The Teeth[e].

The Vikings used to file their teeth.

Theres an interesting phrase.

A Swedish anthropologist analyzed 557 Viking skeletons dating from the year 800 to 1050

and found that 24 of them had deep, horizontal grooves along their upper front teeth.

This would have given them a pretty scary look by todays standards - in fact, its thought

that the Vikings may have done this in order to scare their enemies.

The largest amount of examples of this practice was found at a Viking cemetery on Gotland.

Most of them had neat parallel marks on their two upper front teeth, which may originally

have had charcoal or other colouring rubbed in to add to the whole look.

Either way, they would have looked just that extra bit more terrifying to their enemies,

which may be the little advantage they need in battle …

Next up at number 5 we have The Blood Eagle[f].

This was a brutal form of execution deployed by the Vikings on those who wronged them - even

from their own communities.

It involved an individual being placed in a prone position, their ribs would be severed

from their spine with a sharp tool and their lungs pulled through the opening to create

a pair of wings.

The earliest account of this gruesome execution method comes from the year 867.

It described how King Aella of Northumbria in England was attacked by Viking raiders

led by Ragnar Lothbrok.

When Ragnar was defeated, Aella threw him into a pit of live snakes that killed him.

In revenge, Ragnars sons sailed to England and took the city of York.

They captured Aella and decided to perform the blood eagle on him.

A gruesome death for a gruesome death.

Moving on to number 4 we have the Draugr[g].

I think these may some of the creepiest but coolest parts of viking culture.

The Draugr is an undead creature from Norse mythology.

The Vikings believed that a Draugr is created when a corpse is not left in a horizontal

position but is found upright, indicating that the dead might return.

They also tend to be created from people who were mean, nasty or greedy in life.

Once reanimated, the Draugr would wait in their graves, often guarding treasure in their

burial mound.

If a grave robber came to steal that treasure, theyd have to fight the Draugr first.

They are said to possess superhuman strength and can increase in size at will.

One account describes a Draugr as being -swollen to the size of an ox- … They were said to

slay their victims through crushing, driving them insane or simplifying devouring them

whole and drinking their blood.

Some lovely options there.

Nice variety.

Next up at number 3 we have Infanticide[h].

There is an emerging theory that the Viking age as we know it was caused by the ritual

killing of new born babies, otherwise known as infanticide.

If that sounds crazy - let me explain.

Like many ancient cultures, the Vikings were thought to have selectively killed newborns

for religious rituals, particularly women.

The theory goes that this would have led to a shortage of women within Viking society.

They then would have been driven to sail to new lands on a sort of -marriage imperative-

… hoping to find a partner that wasnt available in their homeland.

Of course, this is just a theory - the real reason is probably much more complex - but

the infanticide aspect seems to be very much a reality of Viking culture …

Moving on to number 2 we have The Soup[i].

As youve probably already gathered so far, the Vikings loved to fight.

A lot of them were injured on the battlefields and tended to by Viking women.

Sometimes there were many men to treat and not enough healer or resources to go around

- so - they came up with a system that involved a soup.

It was made with garlic, leeks and herbs and would be given to the men to eat.

After a few minutes, they would lean in and smell the stomach of the man - if they could

smell the soup - then the wound had pierced their stomach and they were doomed.

They would be made comfortable but ultimately left to their own fate while the healers would

move on to help someone else.

Can you imagine how nerve wracking it would be if they were about to treat you, and then

they smelt the soup …

And finally at number 1 we have The Games[j].

Games should be fun - thats why many of you will find the Viking concept of games to be

quite strange I think.

There are writings that describe some brutal competitions that Vikings took part in for

fun.

One of these was a swimming competition, or rather, a drowning competition.

The entire object of the game was to hold your opponent down underwater and see how

long they could hold their breath for.

If they couldn't get up out of the water, well, then theres a good chance theyd die.

There was also another case of two boys who played this -game- … one of them lost but

survived - he was so upset however that later in the day, he smashed an axe into the back

of the other boys head - he was 6 year old.

Fun games arent all fun and games.

What a note to end on - kids bashing each others brains out with axes.

I love doing these videos because I never know how theyre going to end.

Its amazing.

Thanks again to Vikings: War of Clans for supporting us, links in the description box,

thanks to you as always for watching, my name is Danny Burke and Ill see you all in the

Mobile radio frequencies cause cancer - Duration: 2:53.

The sceptics were probably right.

Mobile radio frequencies cause cancer.

This has now been proven in a study with rats.

But it's not quite that simple, because the waves also have positive effects and the

experiment took place under very special conditions.

So what is it all about?

A warm welcome.

Subscribe to the channel, so you won't miss our new Videos.

So what's the deal now?

The concrete result of the study: If male rats - attention, these are the specific conditions

we mentioned - are being firstly permanently irradiated, and secondly with high doses thirdly

of certain mobile radio waves then they will fourthly get certain tumors.

This applies especially to the heart muscle and the brain.

And the frequencies are those of UMTS and its predecessors.

This is the result of a study commissioned by the US National Toxicology Program.

A direct connection between mobile phone radiation and cancer has thus been proven.

But the research group also says quite clearly that the study does not allow any conclusions

to be drawn about humans.

It is also interesting that female rats are not affected at all or hardly affected at

all.

In humans, there is no situation in which permanent radiation occurs.

In most cases, the intensity of the radiation is much lower as well.

In the experiments, the rats were exposed to four different intensities of radiation.

The weakest one corresponded to the maximum strength permitted for humans.

All other strengths do not occur for normal human conditions.

In addition, positive effects of irradiation were also observed.

The average life expectancy of rats increased.

It is assumed that the waves have a positive effect against kidney failure, which is a

frequent cause of death in rats.

Now further frequencies are to be examined this way like 5G and WiFi.

And mutations found during the experiments will be examined.

It is interesting that there was such a long "radio silence" and that the harmlessness

of mobile radio waves was always emphasized.

I am very curious to see what results the further investigations will reveal.

It's quite tough sometimes to predict the health effects of new technology straight

away, check out our video on "LED-Lights damage eyes", to see what we know about

the long term effect of this technology so far!

Elbphilharmonie+ | »Without Words« mit Johnny Lloyd - Duration: 6:30.

Well, I think, the heart of the work is that there are three musical pieces.

One is the »The Rite of Spring« by Stravinsky,

the other is Bernstein and last one is Kraft.

The whole thing is about creation but more specifically the creative power of women.

It's a process, which is educational in one sense,

but it also has the goal of creating a beautiful, professional work.

In this project we come from many different countries

with completely different backgrounds

– from different styles of dance.

We've been able to create a really great connection

by improvising together and spending the whole day together.

We rehearse from the morning through to the afternoon, and that way you become friends pretty quickly.

I actually printed out the scores – here is the Stravinsky score for example -,

and then selected certain passages,

which I obviously had to adapt to suit my set of instruments.

Sven and I have done five projects now together and over this time,

we've developed quite a functional working relationship.

I'm a bit addicted to him.

Addicted – I know that Johnny rehearses and works a lot with the music,

and that it's an important source of inspiration for him for evolving new ideas.

I guess that's what he means.

In a project like this I think it's totally important to develop together.

For the choreography and the music to develop hand-in-hand.

That's something we're trying to achieve here, too.

I think it should be a kick-ass show.

And I think it should be also a quality of show which is really representative of what the dancers

are able to bring – the very best that the dancers can bring.

The rehearsals lasted for a total of nearly four weeks.

We started rehearsing at the World of Instruments in the Kaistudios in the fall,

and the final event will now be at Kampnagel.

Now at the end, we've gone through quite a lot together.

There were three stages of rehearsals and we had just finished the first piece

but this was only a third of the whole evening and there were two thirds left to do.

I think we got to a point where we created the best possible result that we could have.

It's a full hour – it's constantly busy on stage.

I made the decision to leave a lot of material in,

to not thin out the material because I want the dancers to have the fruit of their labour —

to reveal in the show the things that they worked on.

It's moments quite funny. It's very often aesthetical.

There's a lot of experimental adjustments of existing genres.

It feels like having a baby just to move to another world and leave it behind.

It's always a shame.

But the hope is to create a platform in order for more to happen.

A new feature of the project for us was that we put on workshops

that don't lead into the customary closing presentation,

but into an independent public event of high artistic calibre.

We wanted to give the dancers the opportunity to work closely with Johnny Lloyd,

developing, gathering experience and contributing to this production

artistically and in terms of content.

【東方comicdub】Un incident phéromonal - Remilia ✖ SDM - Duration: 2:16.

Damn Sakuya, if she thinks I didn't notice she was staring at me.

What an impudent girl to see in me anything other than her mistress.

And her skirt... 3cm shorter than yesterday....

She's totally coming onto me. What an inappropriate servant...

It's obvious she's reusing the cups I brought to my lips for indecent purposes!

Underneath her appearances as a perfect maid is truly a depraved woman beyond help!

Shit. Patchy is furious.

Her jealousy must be at its peak for expressing so much anger at my proximity to Sakuya!

Patchy is so in love with me that she has lost her mind.

These eyes... She plunged into the purest madness.

It is easy to imagine her, delirious, killing me and using my body as she pleases.

Her perversity knows no bounds!

Hello, girls! So? Are you having fun without me?

And there she is, the Sappho devotee who's back in charge! Always coming and going at the mansion, chasing me relentlessly! What tenacity!

In her head, she has already abused me over and over again, and today she has come to make her fantasies a reality?

Hi!

I'm sorry to bother you with this, but.... Could I borrow some more rice and soy sauce?

B... but what's her problem, to expose as she does her armpits!

Her female scents float to me, full of pheromones!

She hopes that I feel them and that the pure and innocent person I am awakens to lust?

How can you imagine a priestess being so immoral?

errr, mistress?

Oh shit! I'm surrounded by raging lesbians!

The room is ripe with the stench of bitches!

They're planning to gang rape me.

The four of them, ravishing me like wild animals.

But... no matter how much they may dominate my body with their obscene assaults, my heart will not give in!

I am Remilia Scarlet, proud and pure.

I will never bow to the likes of you... the likes of you...

COME ON! I'M WAITING FOR YOU!

Another incident.

have had charcoal or other colouring rubbed in to add to the whole look.

10 Fascinating Facts About Cooking In The 18th Century - Duration: 10:24.

The 18th century — the Colonial era of America — was a fascinating time for cooking.

While most people didn't yet have their own ovens, and often had to improvise, many

people actually had a pretty decent knowledge of various cooking methods and would use as

complicated a spicing regimen as their means would allow.

Cooking would actually become less complex for a time during the industrial revolution

years later, when many people had even less means, and less time to cook complex meals.

Today, we are seeing a return of increasingly complex cooking, along with much more advanced

tools to do so…

10.

Cooking Puddings In Cloth Bags Was Actually An Incredibly Common Practic

Today, it's easy for someone with no real skill or training to at least heat up some

food and make something somewhat edible.

In fact, most people today have the convenience of a microwave, something people from the

18th century would really have no conception of.

However, back then, some people didn't even have 18th century ovens, and they had to improvise.

One of the strangest, but still quite popular techniques was the method of cooking food

in cloth bags.

The bag would actually be a cloth of the right thickness, and would be boiled in water first

to sterilize it.

The bag would often be floured or buttered so the pudding could come out later, and then

would be filled with the ingredients, wrapped up, and boiled for hours.

A second pot was usually used to keep extra boiling water, so you could keep the main

pot full at all times — this was important as larger puddings could take 7 or more hours

to finish cooking using this method.

9.

Food Preservation Methods Were One Of The Most Important Things To Know

In the 18th century there were, of course, no refrigerators or freezers, and preserving

food was difficult.

Some of the very rich could ship in ice if they wanted to, and preserve certain food,

but even among the rich this was so expensive to keep up for more than the occasional treat

that it would be considered extremely extravagant or perhaps even wasteful.

For this reason, there are many different recipes from the time period that involve

pickling, drying, and other interesting methods to keep foods good as long as possible.

The YouTube channel Townsends (see above), which tries out and demonstrates authentic

recipes from the 18th century, has tried many different food preservation methods from the

time period.

While many of them are effective for preserving everything from strawberries, to eggs, to

potted meat, the usual expected hold time in that period was still usually only a few

weeks, or a couple months at most.

Even putting something down in the coldest part of the cellar could only keep the temperature

down so much, and they didn't have perfect canning methods, so the average family didn't

expect preserved goods to stay edible for long.

More than anything, it was to help make up for their imperfect refrigeration systems,

which were usually just the lowest part of the house.

8.

Nutmeg Was One Of The Most Popular Spices, And Shows Up In Almost Everything

Nutmeg is a spice that most people really don't think that much of today.

It's one of many ingredients that often shows up in things that have "pumpkin"

in their name, and it is said that if you use a whole lot at once, you can get kind

of a delirious high — everyone who has tried this says it is horrible and we do not recommend

it.

Today it is cheap and plentiful, and unless you are in prison looking for an alternative

to pruno, you don't bother with the stuff outside of the occasional pie.

Some people see it show up a lot in 18th century recipes and wonder if people were trying to

do drugs, but the truth is simply that it was a fad, and people wanted to show their

status by putting it in everything if they could afford it.

However, because demand was so great, that meant that fraudsters saw a chance to step

in.

There was a real problem during the 18th century in Colonial America of dishonest traders making

wooden nutmegs, and selling them to unsuspecting consumers who would later realize they had

been had for a pretty decent amount of money.

7.

In The 18th Century, People Had A Taste For Flavors Like Rosewater That We Would Find

Odd

For those who don't know what it is, rosewater is pretty much what it sounds like — a water

that is created by steeping rose petals.

This fragrant essence is something most people would expect in perfumes, but it's still

used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine today; it's even a commonly used flavor

in Turkish Delights.

However, it has fallen almost completely out of favor in Western cuisine.

Apart from the occasional mention on some kind of fancy baking show, by someone who

is played up as "taking a risk," you never really hear about these kind of floral flavors

anymore.

However, back in the day, floral flavors — and rosewater especially — were quite common

in baked goods and sometimes other cooking as well.

For those who wonder why it disappeared, it wasn't so much because people lost their

taste for it, but because bakers started replacing it with what they found to be a better ingredient

for bringing out flavors: vanilla.

Vanilla became the ingredient of choice in the 19th century as it became easier to acquire,

and with artificial substitutes like vanillin that people can get cheap these days, vanilla

is unlikely to be dethroned again anytime soon.

6.

Suet, The Hard White Fat From Kidneys, Was A Staple Of 18th Century Cooking

Suet is a white fat that can be found on the kidneys of various livestock animals.

It has a hard texture that cooks found great for holding together puddings, in particular

— the reason being that due to its crumbly texture when prepared for cooking and its

high melting point, it maintains its texture through a very long cooking process, essentially

being the last part to finish cooking on the inside.

The main point of using suet was to help puddings be a little more airy, instead of just a dense

ball of flour, water, and other such ingredients.

Today, people don't really cook stuff in pudding bags anymore, and so we tend to use

other fats or oils instead.

However, if you want to recreate old 18th century recipes, there are still ways to get

your hands on some suet.

If you live in the United Kingdom, you are especially lucky, as some traditional recipes

still use it so you can find it in some stores.

However, if you live in the United States, you will probably have to order it online.

5.

Enslaved Cooks Were Incredibly Skilled And Brought Knowledge To The Enslaved Community

In 18th century America, the vast majority of black people were still enslaved and forced

to use all of their considerable skills for no pay, beyond what it took to keep them alive.

Many people tend to just think of them as field hands, but history often hides or doesn't

bother to highlight just how important the jobs given to enslaved individuals often were.

One of the most important of these jobs, according to food historian Michael Twitty, was being

an enslaved cook.

He explains that the enslaved cooks became a valuable source of knowledge and skill that

their masters came to rely on, but also an incredibly valuable resource for the rest

of the enslaved community.

They could take back knowledge about cooking that allowed the community to make the best

of every ingredient they had, they could pass on knowledge about literacy, and about anything

else of note they had picked up.

Many people are also unaware that enslaved black cooks basically created American barbecue,

and perfected it back during colonial times.

4.

Seasonal And Regional Food Were All People Had, So They Had To Learn To Get Creative

We have it remarkably easy as a society when it comes to food, as we can even get things

shipped in out of region or out of season.

But in the 18th century, they had to really just make do with what they had most of the

time.

We did mention food preservation earlier, but as we said, many methods were really only

to keep the food long enough for the family to use it before it went bad, and not for

longterm storage.

Even things that were relatively longterm might not seem that long to us.

This meant that wherever you lived, whatever was seasonal was simply what you had to work

with.

Of course, this wasn't unique to the 18th century, but was true for pretty much every

time period before the industrial revolution and mass transportation (as well as refrigeration

and freezing technology) really changed everything.

Back in the day none of that was a reality and even the richest people would likely only

ship in an occasional treat, or a large amount of one specific indulgence.

For the most part, even the well off stuck to whatever was fresh and local to the region

at the time.

3.

"Cheesecakes" That Had No Cheese Were Common In 18th Century Cookbooks

Today, we tend to think of cheesecake as a concoction of cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and

flavorings.

Of course, while cream cheese is modern, that doesn't mean cheesecakes are an entirely

modern invention.

There is evidence that cheesecakes using ricotta, cottage cheese, mascarpone and others existed

long before cream cheese was ever a thing.

However, if you traveled back to 18th century America (and Western Europe) and ordered a

"cheesecake" you would probably find yourself disappointed.

There are quite a few recipes that pop up in 18th century cookbooks that call themselves

a cheesecake, some using various flavors such as lemon, but the one thing that they all

lack is any kind of cheese whatsoever.

As far as those who study the cookbooks of the 18th century can surmise, these were called

cheesecakes because they were made to have the consistency and texture of cheese, and

also were usually made in a pie-like dish and kind of resembled a cheese wheel.

These "cheesecakes" were certainly delicious in their own right, but we would be quite

shocked at being served such a thing as a more traditional 18th century cheesecake in

most countries today.

2.

Raisins, And Other Dried Fruits And Nuts, Were Considered Luxurious Additions To Desserts

Today, you'll often hear the common refrain, especially among children, that they really

don't like nuts in their confections or sweets.

Even a lot of adults will turn up their nose at a sweet with nuts in it (Snickers bars

aside, of course), and most people don't even dare try to bake raisins or other fruits

into anything besides cinnamon raisin bread or oatmeal raisin cookies — and even those

aren't safe from criticism.

As far as most people are concerned, especially in the USA, fruit and nuts in confections

is usually blasphemy, and fruitcake is at the top of the list.

However, back in the 18th century, they would think you crazy for passing up such a delicious,

decadent, rich man's treat that they could only afford once in a while.

During the holidays, people were extravagant and stuffing their desserts with what was,

to them, all the best toppings, while today, many people act as if eating such a food would

be actual torture.

People's taste, and their desire for certain flavors and textures, has certainly changed

a lot since the 18th century.

1.

Eggs Appear In A Ridiculous Amount Of Recipes, And Form The Backbone Of Regular Cooking

Eggs are still one of the most common forms of food we eat, but they are the subject of

hot debate.

Researchers keep waffling (breakfast pun vigorously intended) about whether they're good for

us or not, and how many we should have a day.

However, back in the 18th century, they were one of the most important food staples imaginable

and pretty much everyone had access to eggs of some kind.

They were prepared and eaten in many of the ways we enjoy them today, and a crucial ingredient

in all sorts of savory dishes and baked goods.

To some this may simply seem like a no-brainer, but eggs have simply made up the backbone

of baking for so long due to their leavening abilities, as well as their binding properties.

The high protein and fat content in such a small package has always made it a staple

for anyone looking to survive without the convenience of a modern grocery store.

And while hens may not lay as many eggs in the winter, they do not stop production entirely,

which gave some poorer families a near constant food source.

Having a few chickens was also a lot more affordable than owning and raising game animals.

Trump just declared a national emergency at the border - Duration: 9:24.

After battling for weeks over funding for a border wall, overseeing the longest government shutdown in United States history, and finally signing on to a deal to fund the government, President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency over a contrived crisis at the US-Mexico border

Trump on Friday invoked his power to declare a national emergency in a unilateral effort to make progress on the border wall Congress has thus far denied him

Trump initially demanded $5 billion for the construction of about 200 miles of barrier at the border, and Democrats in Congress have repeatedly refused to go anywhere near that figure

He got about $1.3 billion for border fencing in the deal he finally agreed to, a far cry from the desired amount

So he's going with a national emergency to get more. "We're going to confront the national security crisis on our southern border, and we're going to do it, one way or another, we have to do it," Trump said in a speech at the White House Rose Garden on Friday

Trump will try to cobble together funds from a number of areas and redirect them toward border wall construction

White House officials ahead of the announcement on Friday said he would redirect about $600 million from the Treasury Forfeiture Fund, an account funded by money seized by the US government, $2

5 billion from the Department of Defense's counterdrug activities, and $3.6 billion from other military construction accounts

Trump won't try to take anything from disaster relief. That the president has finally decided to declare an emergency isn't entirely surprising — he has been wavering back and forth on the idea for weeks

So why declare a national emergency in addition to the spending deal? The short answer is that Trump doesn't want to admit he lost

He's already getting less for border fencing than was in the original spending bill he refused to sign in December — and caused a 35-day government shutdown over — so he's looking to executive action instead

There has been some debate about whether Trump can indeed declare an emergency at the border considering there isn't really one, and the answer, at least initially, seems to be that he can

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said on the Senate floor on Thursday that he would support the emergency declaration

A 1976 law gives the president authority to declare national emergencies within certain constraints

Whether there's an actual emergency isn't one of them. Many presidents have declared national emergencies, including George W

Bush after 9/11 and Barack Obama during the swine flu outbreak in 2009. Before Trump's declaration, there were 31 national emergencies active in the United States — his marks the 32nd

In recent history, presidents have declared national emergencies under the National Emergencies Act of 1976, which lets them issue emergency declarations under specific constraints

Basically, Trump can only use specific powers Congress has already codified in law, and he has to say which powers he's using

The 1976 law was actually meant to rein in presidential power and put some guardrails around how presidents declared national emergencies

It does not define what counts as an emergency and what doesn't. "He has broad leeway to declare an emergency, frankly, whether one exists or not," Elizabeth Goitein, a co-director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice, who recently wrote an in-depth explainer of presidential emergency powers in the Atlantic, recently told me

Trump on Friday defended his decision by noting that other presidents have declared emergencies in the past

"It's been signed many times before," and there has "rarely been a problem," he said

Trump said his predecessors had declared national emergencies for "far less important things in some cases

" There is no emergency Despite Trump's fearmongering about an influx of dangerous illegal immigrants and terrorists at the US-Mexico border, there is actually no such crisis

There's been no significant shift in the situation in recent days or weeks that suddenly renders urgent action necessary

Moreover, Trump had two years of an entirely Republican-controlled Congress to do something about immigration

Now that there's a Democratic-controlled House, he's suddenly saying there's an emergency

This isn't the first time Trump has invented an immigration crisis when convenient — ahead of the midterms, he warned about a dire threat from migrant caravans, only to essentially drop the issue after the elections

There has been a rise in asylum seekers to the US, but seeking asylum is legal, and that's not what Trump is focusing on here

Congress won't pay for his border wall, he thinks he'll lose his base if he abandons it, and so he's manufacturing panic and going to any length possible to get it done

Trump will likely face challenges in court. He could also see pushback from Congress, which could pass a joint resolution to override the declaration

But Trump would have to sign the resolution, so to override it, Congress would need a two-thirds majority in both houses

In other words, the emergency declaration is here for now. The news moves fast. Catch up at the end of the day: Subscribe to Today, Explained, Vox's daily news podcast, or sign up for our evening email newsletter, Vox Sentences

My Cafe Update 2019.2 Announcement: Brazil! - Duration: 5:35.

Hey everyone, I'm Ola, and today we are going to play My Cafe: Recipes &Stories.

In this video I'm going to announce update 2019.2

Oh, yeah, and I already see there is a car approaching.

Take a look at that!

Who's that?

Oh, that's Chloe!

Let's talk to her Can I get you anything?

- In a second, she's waiting for her boyfriend Max.

Oh, so they are going to come together!

So, they are here in holiday, and want to take it easy, especially Max...

Max and Chloe are going to arrive to all players starting from level 8 for 16 days.

So they guys are here on a vacation, and this is all going to be just as usual:

you have to fulfill ther 30 orders, and for the 30 orders they are going to give you unique

items, they are going to give you diamonds, and they are going to give you gifts.

They will also be a very special story about Brazil, actually.

And right now I want to show you My Cafe, because it has changed.

We don't have winter anymore.

Instead of that, we have a lot of coffee trees right here.

And also, wow!

Take a look at that, we have a real beach!

So this means that we are in Brazil right now, and actually this update was prepared

together with our players from Brazil, who were actually providing their feedback about

what they would like to see in My Cafe.

And actually this boardwalk was taken from real life, this is really such a boardwalk,

a very famous one in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro.

And for now we are going to have that wonderful, beautiful beach in front of My Cafe.

Just take a look at that preloader!

It's so beautiful, and actually Max and Chloe are standing in front of the Selaron staircase.

And this is the very popular staircase in Rio de Janeiro, as well.

It actually has a very touching and dramatic story.

Actually the man called Selaron started to make this staircase in the 1990s, and he was

so obsessed with that, he didn't have a lot of money, or he didn't have a lot of resources.

But again, he worked on that all days long, and he also said that he will work on that

staircase until the day he dies.

And one day, in 2013, he was found dead at the staircase, which is very touching, actually.

The man put 23 years to decorating the staircase, and now it's such a wonderful landmark in

Brazil.

So when we pass the story with Chloe and Max, we will be able to get some unique items in

My Cafe, and right now I want to show you some of them.

So, we are going to get a paired item, which is going to be toucans. There is a Caroline

toucan, the lady.

And there is also going to be a male toucan, which is going to be presented to us by the

story.

We are also going to have a special T-shirt, just take a look at that.

This is the T-shirt from the famous football star Pele, but also Neymar is wearing the

same t-shirt with the same number.

So, you just decide for yourself, who you appreciate more, Pele or Neymar.

And you are also going to get this beautiful Flamingo lamp for free, if you pass the story.

You are also going to see a special carnival sofa in the special offer, it will go as a

bonus.

Besides that, definitely, we have to check on the appearance of our staff.

It's going to be a separate menu with the costumes.

Oh, wow!

And now you can dress your staff in the costume fully.

So, the carnival costume is going to cost 485 diamonds, and you are going to get the

gold for purchasing it.

Just wait for the needed dialog in the story, in the special event story.

And right now I'm going to show you a woman in it, so: huh?how do you like that?

This is really beautiful, I really like it!

The ladies look really nice, all of them, just take a look at that.

Both the ladies and the men costumes look really beautiful and nice, so I would really

recommend buying it, if you want a gold gift, and if you really like it.

We are going to have the new season, as well.

This is going to be a coconut season.

Which will last from February 22 till March 11.

And it's going to comprise 3 festivals.

So, this is our palm tree, let's click on it.

Wow, this looks so bright and beautiful!

You will have to earn cups personally in the festivals in the townships to get more gems

each day.

The more cups you get, the more gems you get every day.

And you will also be offered to purchase a diamond palm tree, which is going to bring

you VIP bonuses, 800 diamonds straight away, and then 50, 115, 150 diamonds instead of

1,2, or 3 diamonds per day.

And the diamond palm tree will stay in your cafe at the end of the season, if you purchase

it, and the monkey is also going to stay there.

So, I can't wait to see that coconut season in work.

So, actually the update is going to be available next week, and I can't wait to see it.

Well, and thank you so much for playing with me.

I hope you have enjoyed this video.

If you did, then please put your thumbs up and subscribe to my channel, and let's play

together.

is right here.

Guys, thank you so much, the pink gift will be sent to you in the game.

If you also want a pink gift, please leave your comment below this video on Youtube,

and ask some really good questions about the update, and tell me why you are waiting for

it.

I will choose 5 best comments by next Friday, till then - have fun in the game, and see
