Currently, 57 biogas plants are operating in Latvia.
6 of the plants are operating in municipal landfills,
1 in Riga biological wastewater treatment plant,
2 are processing food production wastewater,
and 48 plants are using agricultural and food waste and energy crops.
All these plants are producing electricity and heat.
The total electric power in 2016 was 63.116 MWel.
Jointly they injected into the Latvian power grid
333.6 GWh of electricity in 2014,
374.87 GWh in 2015,
and 377.99 GWh in 2016.
0.08985 - 0.21263 EUR was paid per each transferred kWh,
depending on the size of the plant,
and a total amount of 56,805 thousand EUR
minus 5-15% of the SET (subsidized energy tax) was paid.
Different types of biomass are used as the raw material
for biogas production in Latvia.
Mostly the manure from cattle, pigs and poultry is used,
as well as maize and grass silage
and remains in grain driers dropout.
A variety of food production waste, vegetable waste,
greenhouse waste, non-standard potatoes,
damaged food, slaughterhouse waste
and residues of milk processing also is utilised.
Some plants have been using
even 15 - 17 types of biomass in one year.
