Fukushima- Radioactive zone
Japan
March 11, 2011
As a result of the earthquake and tsunami, a series of nuclear accidents occur at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant
causing one of the world's largest nuclear disasters
we came to the place 8 years after the accident to present you the history of that disaster
and tell the truth about the zone
We spent 4 days living in a city where it's possible to live again
we ate and drank products from the contaminated zone
and we breathed the same air as the plant's employees
we will see abandoned: cities, villages, hypermarkets, casinos, houses, shops, cars and schools
and we will go near the reactor
this pilot episode is the first of a series of 10 episodes in the contaminated zone
we will focus on it in the stages of the disaster, the consequences and the actual state of Fukushima prefecture
we are starting our first day of the fukushima trip
We've prepared several episodes for you
We are currently going to the city of Soma, where we will meet with our guide
according to our plan, we will spend the first two days with a guide and the next two days alone
the guide is from a non-governmental organization that deals with propagating the truth about Fukushima
Our translator is Emil Truszkowski, the co-founder of Aiko & Emil channel
we are currently in the city of Soma
near the Fukushima Dai-Ichi power plant
you are definitely interested in the level of radiation, we are currently in the so-called "white zone"
in the area where no evacuation was carried out
I will show you, but I must first focus on the camera
here is 0.14 microsievert, almost nothing
we will look for Hot-Spot (places with increased radiation) and we will see how it looks in the zone itself
one of the first points is one of many landfills of irradiated land
but first we will see the process of removing and processing contaminated soil
which goes to such a place
there is a landfill behind us
it has been leased from a farmer for 4 years
our guide told us that It have been functioning for 8 years, and nothing changes here
and people do not want to return to their lands anymore
mainly because it is unprofitable for them
despite the fact that there are large fields of rice that are not different from those in other parts of the country
but no one wants to buy it
0,21(microsievert) a little more than before but..
but it is still safe, and remember that we are 30 km from the power plant
after all, people live here
you can even see our car :)
during the whole trip we saw a dozen such landfills
but what really happened in Fukushima?
March 11, 2011 at 14:46
the biggest earthquake took place since 140 years
it had a power of 9 on the Richter scale
the epicenter was 140 km from the island of Honshu
on this island is the Fukushima Dai-Ichi power plant
moments after the shocks all working reactors were turned off
the earthquake broke the power lines of the power plants
which are necessary for proper operation of reactors
Emergency power from diesel generators was started
Meanwhile, the tsunami was slowly coming
we cross the next zone, and enter Namie city
this place is very close to the power plant
we'll see what the guide will tell us
and whether it will allow us to enter some homes, or see the infrastructure up close
but this is one of the cities for which we came here
on the way to the city of Namie, we stopped for a moment
all this area behind me
here once stood a house
but after the earthquake and tsunami...
ok in this particular place the tsunami did not reach
...this house was irradiated after a power plant failure
everything here has been razed to the ground
decontamination took place in this area, so radiation is relatively low
but in a moment we will go with our guide to places where decontamination did not take place
and we compare both values
here it was not "cleaned"
no decontamination was carried out in the mountains (in Japanese)
-1,89 (microsievert) -we went only a few meters further
-I will put it on the ground -4,17
nice..
-it's not quite a lot -but it is 4 times more than normal
and we are 5 meters from the place that has been cleaned
at 15:42 the wave hits the reactor, and washes off the fuel for the aggregates (Diesel spare cooling aggregates)
the battery power has been activated to ensure cooling water movement
Energy in batteries lasts for 8 hours
Prime Minister Naoto Kan orders evacuation of residents within a radius of 3 km from the power plant
and within a radius of 10 km, people must stay in their homes
the pressure and temperature in the reactor cores start to grow slowly
and we are going further into the zone
we're stopped in Namie city
how many inhabitants lived here before the catastrophe?
22 thousand
part of this city is open and people can slowly come back
but still part of the city is closed
while we stopped close to the store
products are already looted
this store is on the outskirts so it was not likely to be reopened
probably waiting for better moments, until more residents come back
remember that only 900 people returned to this city
for such a big city, it's really not much
look at this..
it must have been a car parts store
there are still parts from the suspension
on the other side, people normally work
probably one of the houses is demolished
gentlemens on the left are working
I'm going to someone's garage
ladder, leaves, possible to lie here for 7 years
Rusted tools, unused for a long time
and a clock that stopped in time
a symbol, just like this clock, the city stopped in time
it looks like a Mazda, but Emil said it was Suzuki
the only proof that it has been here for a long time is empty tires
amazing view
pay attention to the wipers, they are all rusted
before I came here I had the idea that there are cities that are absolutely abondoned
cities where life is, and cities that are slowly coming back to life
it looks a bit different, you can see houses behind me
if I had the keys, I could go in and live in them
in fact, they are abandoned
and no one live here
it all looks like someone has made an injection, he closed the door and left for a 7-year vacation
it can stand here..
for another 20years...
the only thing you can hear here is a passing car once in a while
and birds
another tightly closed house
blinds covered
and there is a coca cola box in the corner
everything is closed..
no one will steal it, it's all here since the catastrophe
the only one who can move it is either animals or wind
we recorded a completely separate episode about this city
because we want to show you as much as possible
but for now we are coming back to the car, and we are going further
we are going to the east of the zone, passing through road No. 6
it is the only street that can be traveled without permission
we suddenly reach a huge empty field
there was once a village in this area
Ukedo village
completely destroyed by the tsunami
only a few houses remain
to make you realize the enormity of this tragedy
here there were houses all around
here there were no arable fields
there were houses everywhere
see, driveway to the remains of the house, and all this is a bushy area
here is one of the few houses that survived
you can see that it is badly damaged
tv on the front :)
look at this..
there is a generator set there
and there are power tanks lying there
some bars
it seems to me that all of this has been carried by water
and placed in this building
what is that?
there was a market nearby
and...
and port
it is possible that it is related...
... to events in the port
some information boards
the wave had a very easy path, it is an empty area
now it's empty, there were houses here
but you can not imagine it
fields and destruction
here are cartons for fish
there were identical, but plastic
because there was a market there
there had to be trade there
this hall has survived in good condition
because these trees maybe could cover it..
-here are identical containers for fish -yes it is..
not far away there is a school built by TEPCO company
owner of the power plant
we are slowly moving to it, passing waste incinerators
among other things, old houses are utilized here
but what happened next, in the power plant after the tsunami?
from March 12 and for several days, as a result of the increase in temperature and pressure
hydrogen collected in the concrete shell -exploded
the explosion occurred in reactors 1 and 3
while in reactor No. 2 the explosion occurred in a Torus steam Condenser
radiation rises to 11,000 microsieverts
the prime minister decides to evacuate 184,000 people within a radius of 20 km
within a radius of 20-30 kilometers, it was forbidden to leave the house
the battle with the invisible enemy begins..
..the battle with radiation
we are entering a primary school in Ukedo
it was built from TEPCO money
which is company responsible for the nuclear power plant
a company that is not liked in Japan anymore
pay attention to the clock, 15:40
at that hour tsunami passed
the clock stopped exactly at this moment
-According to the public opinion,Tepco is... -hated.. -..hated and responsible for this disaster
people hate this company
in the place where I stand, there is an increase
At this point I should already have changed shoes
there were slippers in the cabinets, identical cabinets were standing here
the cabinets were wooden, they did not withstand the tsunami strength
they had no chance
here is a gymnasium
oh boy
everything is colapsed...
look in what condition the floor is
here was the scene
it literally took away my speech
everything was washed away by water
when We walking here, I realize what the elemental strength was
the teachers of this school showed great knowledge
immediately after the earthquake, they ordered the children to run to the nearby hills
they had to guess that such an earthquake could trigger a wave of tsunami
and only thanks to these teachers, the children survived
nobody died
respects
let's start your imagination now
there is the strongest earthquake in Japan (in the history of 140 years of measurements)
9 on the Riechter scale
and suddenly a huge wave appears
a wave of 15 meters in height
new breakwaters that are currently being built
I am not sure if they would be able to stop such a wave, but the Japanese taught by history will surely build a stronger one
but just imagine it
it really was a huge tragedy
which caused the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people
even not counting fatalities
this school is destroyed, but since it was built by Tepco, it had to be very well equipped
some room for learning technical classes
some ...
...mechanism on the wall..
it's hard to say
another clock...
time stopped when the water came
another landfill
probably from this city
drawings of two Sumo players on the floor
they fighting each other
8 years ago ordinary lessons were conducted here
Soon will be the 8th anniversary
children who came to classes 8 years ago, did not expect that they would face some tragedy
laptop and school supplies
even more laptops...
March 27, 2016, We'll be back to our school (inscription in Japanese)
for the next few days, firefighting from helicopters is underway, which were covered with special plates protecting against radiation
heavy fire engines were brought in so that they could pump the cooling water without leaving the vehicle
On March 18, they managed to connect the power to reactor No. 1
a few days later to the rest of the buildings in the power plant
a few days later, Tepco and the government reached a state of cold shutdown
but what to do with a huge zone around the power plant?
the guide decided that we would go even closer to the power plant
as close as possible
here the red zone begins, then you can not go without a permit
(speaks Japanese)
he said that we must have permission here
exactly
here the red zone begins and you must have permission to go there
there you can not enter because construction work is under way
but we can go to this breakwater
and from this breakwater you can see reactor No. 1
let's run :)
you can see the reactor in the distance
we are as close as possible to the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant as it is possible, without permissions
Here is Konrad, here is breakwater
and here is the reactor
we approached the reactor Fukushima Dai-Ichi
that is, the infamous power plant that 8 years ago caused one of the largest nuclear disaster in the world
without permits it is impossible to get closer
we are sitting 3 km from the reactor
because of hydrogen explosion they look like this
we will show you what the radiation level is here
currently there is 0.17 microsievert
here is a normal life, you can normally eat food from this prefecture
at every step there are large dosimeters better than ours, and you can come here safely
we are going south of the zone, along route no. 6
this time to Fukushima Daini power plant No. 2
certain prohibitions apply on the road
do not stop or open the windows in the car
you can not walk, either use bicycles or motorbikes
there is a guard at every entry and exit
there is police at every intersection
Only vehicles with passes can enter
many times in this movie you could see trucks with sand
there are so many of them, and each of them transports the land for utilization
on route No. 6, the radiation level is increased from time to time
especially around the No. 1 power plant
Meanwhile, we're reaching the place
Fukushima Daini Power Plant No.2
here from the side there is a chimney, from an energetic block
and here is the incinerator of radioactive garbage
the largest radiation was in the vicinity of the red zone, up to 5 microsievert
at the moment it is a bit bigger than in our homes
-Do you know that we've traveled half of the world to finally record it? - I know
we've been waiting for over 3 years for it
I will tell you about radiation in the red zone
these are not big values, but they go beyond the norm
That's why they can scare you
you've seen a movie from chernobyl somewhere here
where I was in the basement of the hospital, and I managed to register 4000 microsievert
there were only 5 here
although it is far above the norm
it is normal that people are afraid, I do not know if I would like to live here
how is it with the inhabitants in closed zones?
after the accident, they received substitute housing in barracks, such as this one
even for Japanese standards, terribly small rooms
in addition, each of them receives a small monthly compensation from TEPCO
as to zones, the situation is very dynamic
all the time decontamination is carried out reducing the contaminated area
some places unavailable a year ago, today are possible to explore
and you do not need any permits to go there
According to the official site of the prefecture, the Japanese clean up subsequent objects every month
people can slowly return to their homes
but not everyone wants
some of them have lost all their belongings
others have put together their lives in another area
but there are those who will never come back. Because they are gone
according to the survey conducted among the residents as to the willingness to return, there was a lack of stores in the first place
on the second one there is no infrastructure, e.g. hospitals
only in 3rd place is the fear of radiation
we were able to talk to people who returned to the city of Namie
and founded local businesses from scratch
newspaper in a local restaurant, with photos from before the disaster
and what it looks like now we see it ourselves
the rice we eat comes from this region, here you have information about it
it's all new restaurants
and here is a map showing the path of the contaminated cloud
how to sum it all up?
after the first day, our image of Fukushima changed by 180 degrees
above all, it is not a huge isolated zone, such as in Chernobyl
currently only the zones closest to the power plant are closed
people are slowly returning to their homes and they really want us to see the region as it truely is
and not as it was created
we can not deny that radiation does not occur here
however, the level of contamination is not lethal
in this episode, we wanted to show you the true picture of Fukushima prefecture and tell the story of the catastrophe
Before we tell you what will happen in the next episode, we've prepared some interesting facts about Fukushima
Fukushuima is a prefecture with a large city of the same name
zone is several cities and villages within a radius of 30 km from the power plant
the radioactive cloud did not reach the city of Fukushima
an earthquake and tsunami killed about 20,000 people
however, as a result of reactor failures and radiation - nobody
according to the WHO report, the risk of cancer in Japan may increase by 1%
after entering the word "radiation in fukushima" in google, the result is a photo of this map
which supposedly shows the level of ocean contamination
however, units on the map are given in centimeters
something is wrong, right?
the map shows the tsunami level
not the radiation
but skilfully chosen colors suggest something different
there was a hydrogen explosion in the power plant, not a nuclear explosion
as a result of which irradiated particles escaped into the atmosphere
although the zone is shrinking, some areas will not open again
the power plant will not return to normal work
throughout our stay we had a dosimeter on
for 4 days we took the same dose as in Tokyo
we are not opponents or advocates of nuclear energy
we do not deny the impact of radiation on organisms
we approach the whole subject objectively, showing the actual state
none of us has a doctorate in nuclear energy, while in the description of the film there are sources on which we learned to this episode
in the next episode, we will enter abandoned buildings, preserved in such a good condition that we have never seen before
subscribe to our channel not to miss the next episode in which we will visit a huge abandoned city
check the Emil channel which also recorded Fukushima with us
See You on the next exploration!
