Hey – it's Pastor Allen, and we're working on the topic of "Overcoming Discouragement."

You know, discouragement is a part of life.

I think when You're battling it, you think somehow maybe you're weak or wrong, or there's

something unusual, or your circumstances are more painful than everybody else's.

That feeling is legitimate.

I understand that feeling, but the reality is nobody gets through life without challenges

and suffering and difficulty.

What we have to choose is to not stay in those places.

The key element is that we are determined to go through those seasons,

to not stay in them.

Well, I want to take just a moment with you and talk about an essential element

in defeating discouragement.

And here it is: It requires courage.

You know, I don't think we very often think of courage in the context of our faith.

But it's a very important component of a victorious life.

It takes courage to follow the Lord.

When we read our Bibles, and we read about all those characters that we learned about

in Sunday school or whenever, it took real courage to walk the God-path for their life.

There's a verse in Joshua, chapter 1, that I think is important.

It's Joshua 1:9.

It's a part of Joshua's instructions.

God said, "'Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?

Don't be terrified.

Don't be discouraged, for the Lord Your God will go with you wherever you go.'"

In fact, in that first chapter when Joshua's getting his assignment, six times God says

to him, "Be strong and courageous."

Let me ask you a question.

If God says, "Be strong and courageous," what do you think is about to happen to Joshua?

I would suggest he's about to be terrified and discouraged.

And so God said, "Be strong and courageous."

Well, that's my invitation to you today.

Strength and courage aren't about your circumstances or your feelings.

It's a choice we make.

God will bring us through.

You can be courageous while your circumstances are very awkward or uncomfortable or unpleasant.

God will bring us through. Our God is able. Don't you give that up.

You start to thank God that He's a delivering God, a God Who restores and makes whole and

makes new, a God of new beginnings.

I want to pray for you: God, give us Your courage.

Give us Your boldness, Your hope.

Lift our eyes above our circumstances, to see Your faithfulness.
