We are a team,
but you know what they say about team, there's no "I" in team.
Folks, how many times have you heard that?
Probably a bunch,
because it's been around a long time in leadership training.
And while I understand the original intention behind that message,
I believe that over the years in delivering it
we've gotten a little bit away from the original intention
and it's led to some things in the workplace that were not intended to start with.
One of the things it's led to is some managers using the word "we" for everything,
almost to the exclusion
of the words "I" and "you."
So not only are they overusing it
but they are inappropriately using it
when the words "I" and "you" would be appropriate.
Another thing it's led to is
the notion that
competition and teamwork are incompatible.
And I believe that competition and teamwork are very compatible,
even desirable
when paired together
in the right way.
Folks, the team that I want to work on is where every member gets up in the morning,
looks at them self in the mirror and says to themselves,
"I will strive to be, I will contend to be,
I will compete with myself to be the very best person I can be
in the workplace today.
And I won't even think about
commenting on another person's performance
until I know I'm giving my best.
And then I will take that attitude with me to work
and pair it with
all of the attitudes of my teammates"
and what kind of team would that be if they all had the same attitude?
Another thing I will do is I will compete with my teammates
because we recognize
that when we compete with each other
both of us grow; both of us get better.
And we will continue to compete to be the best,
making each one of us better, until such time
as we recognize it is time to take our competitive selves
and put it to the side and bring forth
our cooperative selves.
You see we recognize that competition amongst ourselves
makes all of us better.
And we also recognize there's a time and a place for that,
and there's a time and a place for us to be cooperative
as a team together.
And we are competitive with each other when that is appropriate
and we turn the corner and be cooperative with each other
when, in fact, that is appropriate.
So when is competition absolutely compatible with teamwork?
When you first have employees who say to themselves
on a daily basis, "I will compete with myself, first,
to be the very best I can be.
And secondarily, I will compete with my teammates
to make all of us better until such time as we recognize
it is time to put aside the competitiveness and bring forth the cooperativeness."
Take those two principles into your team, and when you can get everybody operating that way
watch your teamwork improve
in a very positive direction.
