Fabinho endured a slow start to life at Anfield following his summer move from AS Monaco
The £39million summer signing had, rather bizarrely, even been linked with a January move away from Liverpool at one stage during his so far short tenure
His early travails have been well documented but he waited patiently before being handed his first Premier League start in late October to make an impression in Liverpool's 4-1 win against Cardiff City and since then he has rarely looked back
Jurgen Klopp has even switched from his favoured 4-3-3 formation to a 4-2-3-1 system to help get the best out of Fabinho and fellow new signing Xherdan Shaqiri to the great benefit of the team
The Brazilian slowly came to terms with English football and started to get better every week with wins against AFC Bournemouth and Everton being two standout performances where Fabinho started up to that point in the season
And then came Manchester United. Fabinho was literally everywhere. Shielding the defence
Taking the ball off the toes of United midfielders. Thundering into challenges. Dictating the play
Driving forward. And, of course, delivering the most delicious of assists for Sadio Mane to fire Liverpool into a richly-deserved first-half lead
He was at it again against Wolverhampton Wanderers, setting up Mohamed Salah 's opener to make it two assists from two outings
And it by this point even his most staunch supporters – and how vociferous they were during those early missteps – will have been surprised by the rate of improvement, along with the extra bows to his game
Of course, the Brazilian won't start in every game with incredibly strong competition from Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Naby Keita and Gini Wijnaldum in the engine room
But he offers something different to the rest in the form tackles, interceptions, clearances and aerial duels while out of possession being Liverpool's new leader in the press
That versatility, which also includes the fact he has cemented a place at right-back with El Selecao, has proved absolutely vital to Jurgen Klopp's side because it meant he was able to come into the side and start in the centre-back position when the Reds needed that position filled most
He was seemingly Liverpool's only senior option to play in the heart of defence after injuries to Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip left them incredibly short of options and so it was to be as the Reds made their way down to the South Coast to face Brighton needing to return to winning ways after losing their proud unbeaten record to Manchester City in the previous league match
And if ever you have needed proof why Liverpool made their early summer signing in Fabinho then this might have been it
Coming off the back of some excellent performances in the midfield having grown tremendously in that role he found himself thrown into the centre-back position alongside Virgil van Dijk, given the Reds defensive woes in that position
Against Brighton the Brazilian didn't look one bit out of place in the heart of defence and didn't put a foot wrong
The Seagulls played very deep and rarely got forward, but when they did Fabinho showed his excellent reading of the game as he stood firm to block threatening shots and snuff out counter-attacks time after time
In the air too he battled well and consistently won his aerial duels and alongside Van Dijk and looked every bit assured as a centre-back
Fabinho has certainly made his presence felt on the pitch and when he starts a match Liverpool look an incredible threat as shown by the fact he has started nine times for the Reds in the Premier League this year winning eight of those games and drawing just the one with 23 goals thrown in to boot for the team while only four have been conceded
Of course statistics never tell the whole story because the work rate and performances of the whole team this season have been something to admire and go a long way into achieving those results
What it does show, is that Fabinho's influence on a match when he plays from the beginning is not to be underestimated
He has started to make himself an integral part of the Reds' set-up and will no doubt continue to be key in the heart of midfield as the Premier League title challenge enters its most intriguing phase particularly if these performance numbers are anything to go by
