Hey guys, welcome back to gannaca Future Challenges, our series
and today we gonna talk about algorithms because everybody talks about
algorithms right?
Well that´s not really the reason but as algorithms indeed are to be found
everywhere right now, in every car, in every Smartphone, in every supermarket,
we should take a minute to reflect that this upcoming machine regime
that algorithms translate into, is looked upon in very different ways.
Depending on what generation you belong to.
And to make things a little easier I gonna reflect on only two different perspectives again.
The first being the digital immigrant, who hears the term algorithm and thinks:
threat, machine, cold, harsh, impersonal and maybe dangerous.
While the digital native thinks: Wow nice, the machine taking over and taking away
all the pain from me and my daily grind, more convenience etc.
Well obviously we all know reality is a bit more grey shaded, it´s not zeros and ones,
only it´s not black and white but there certainly is a new school emerging
and that´s something that I think is worth sharing because especially in companies
you still have a lot of moments where the highest paid persons opinion
at the end of the day makes the deal. It decides about where to go,
where to put the money and whom to hire, maybe.
And that is old school because opinions have to be respected
but they are not good enough anymore. The old school, we all know it,
it is based on Google, gut instincts, silverbacks, NBAs and network
and so far people belonging to that old school line of thinking where tremendously successful.
They met in business clubs, they maybe created even a great social network
and leverage but mainly deals were made with a handshake in a backroom.
And the new school says no, this is too limited by human cognition
and we need something that is going beyond human cognition.
And that is the new school, where you have at the core machine learning,
powerful computers that take in so much data, like no human brain ever could.
Machines that can read billions of x ray images for instance,
to come up with a result, with a likeability of someone being sick or not
that the decision upon that case is of a much, much better quality at the end of the day
than ever imaginable before.
And of course machine learning isn´t the only thing in that new school.
There´s also knowledge graphs, there is micro experimentation,
there is exhaust data. So you could say there´s a dashboard of information
that is being read from signals, millions, maybe billions of signals
that are put into that machine that help us to overcome our own cognitive limitations.
And then you have the best of both worlds. You can have as a fundament
what the machine suggests to us, what we are looking at, with so many different
factors in play that again our own brain couldn´t even handle it.
And not even a good could handle it. And then strong opinions based on experience,
based on personal knowledge, based on empathy also at the end of it.
That´s a merger of man and machine in a way that I personally even
hold really highly up upon to. And I think that new school is something that you guys
should talk about in your organizations. Maybe read about first, so you get an idea
and then change the way you educate people, you train them and of course
change also the way you take on decisions.
Old school - new school. This is your challenge for 2019. Bye bye.
