- [Narrator] Okay, so this is the American Airlines

Premium Economy cabin on a triple seven.

You can see it's two-four-two configuration.

And quite a small cabin, there's just three rows

at the sides and four rows in the center.

I'm standing at the front of the cabin, which is row 16.

You got row 16, 17, 18, and 19 in the center.

And then at the sides you're looking at

16, 17, and 18 there.

Front row is obviously the one you want

if you like the legroom.

This is on a triple seven 300, I should point out.

So that row 16 A and C, they're great seats.

See, if you are in those seats,

your in-flight entertainment's gonna come

out of the arm in front of you,

and it's got some leg rests there.

Reclines as normal, as you'd expect.

Same for that front row there, 16.

Those seats are D, E, G, and H.

Just moving back to the more standard seats,

the ones that are in the center,

you can see that the leg rest is slightly different.

It just comes out, it's more of a foot rest.

Comes down from the seat in front.

And then you've got storage for magazines,

a coat hook, some more storage below.

The back row, row 19, looks a good one

from one point of view, because you can recline,

I guess without disturbing anyone or being disturbed.

But of course, bear in mind

that because of the configuration,

you know you're gonna have

the curtain between you and economy.

And in one sense, you are almost sitting

in economy class, in terms of noise.

And also bear in mind that if there are children,

there may well be bassinet seats here.

Actually, it doesn't look like it is there,

but there are bassinet seats in row 20 there.

That's what those things on the wall are, those markers.

Okay, these are the seats toward the window

on the right hand side.

These are L and J, and you've got rows 18, 17, and 16.

It's quite a spacious cabin.

The seats are obviously dedicated seats for premier economy.

Cái áo khoác của anh trợ lý do thời tiết về tối lại lạnh, cái quần cái đôi giày dính toàn đất đỏ vì đi tham thực tế, khảo sát điện, suối, đốt lửa trại, rồi xuống đi tới 1 buôn khác

What is the cause of my many failures? | J. Krishnamurti - Duration: 44:56.

Question 1: For the last seven years,

whatever work I have attempted to undertake

whether inwardly, psychologically, or externally

in the fields of business, finance, education, family and so on,

has ended in failure.

Anything that I have touched has turned to ashes.

What is the cause of this state of affairs

and what is the remedy?

For the last seven years, whatever work I have attempted to undertake

whether inwardly, psychologically, or externally

in the fields of business, finance, education, family and so on,

has ended in failure.

Anything that I have touched has turned to ashes.

What is the cause of this state of affairs

and what is the remedy?

Are you interested in this question?

Are you interested in this question,

or is it somebody else's question in which you are not interested,

and only interested in your own question?

The questioner asks why

everything he has touched outwardly, inwardly,

has turned into ashes,

and what is the cause of it and what is the remedy?

It is a rather interesting question if you go into it carefully.

We all want to succeed.

We worship the god of success or the goddess of success,

politically, religiously

and in the field of business, science,

you all want to be recognised,

rewarded,

famous.

I do not know if you have watched among the scientists

the in-fighting that goes on amongst themselves,

among the professors, amongst the business people.

My family is better than your family

– you know, the whole process of the desire to succeed.

What is success?

Please, I am asking you the question,

you have to reply to it.

You can't all reply,

then too much noise, we wouldn't understand each other,

but you must respond to that.

Why is it that we all seek to be successful?

What does successful mean?

Answer it inwardly for yourself.

To fulfil your desires,

to have more money,

to be famous,

to have the Nobel Prize,

and if you can't you are jealous, angry, fighting?

So what does success mean?

And you are a disciple of some guru

– I hope you aren't –

if you are, you want to attain, whatever that may mean,

you want enlightenment, whatever that may mean.

It is the same process in the business world,

in the psychological world,

in the so-called spiritual world,

we all want to be successful,

to achieve something

– why?

Why this tremendous urge in the affluent society

and in society that is not so?

What is the human urge that propels us,

drives us to seek success?

Please, answer it.

Is it that through power, through money,

you have freedom and you can enjoy that freedom?

Money has become very important,

and having no money also becomes important.

Power, political power, religious power,

the idols that are in the temple with their priests,

all that is a form of power.

You all want that,

power over somebody or other,

and all this you call success.

You are not so beautiful, you want to be beautiful,

and so on and on and on.

Does success depend on comparison?

On competition?

You are answering, please.

In business,

every boy wants to be successful in examinations,

and so on.

What does all that mean,

this tremendous urge to be successful,

to achieve, to become?

Please answer that – to become.

I am not this but I will become that.

I am poor, I am going to work like blazes

and get powerful, money, better position,

which is this everlasting struggle to become something.

You are an apprentice to a barrister

and then you want to be the barrister,

you know the game that we all play to become something.

What is it that is becoming?

Please answer this question to yourselves:

what is it that is becoming?

Your desire to achieve your goal,

to achieve a better position, a status

– what is it that is becoming, the thing that is becoming?

You understand my question?

I am nothing but I will become something.

What is it that says, I am nothing but I will become something?

You understand my question?

I am angry, violent, I will become non-violent.

That is your game you play.

But in the meantime you are sowing the seeds of violence.

Please,

this is important to find out for oneself,

what is it that is becoming?

Is it desire?

If it is desire,

to have a car, to have a better house,

to have a better wife,

more beautiful, more subservient, domestic

– so is desire the root of becoming?

I am not saying anything against desire

so don't withhold it.

We are just questioning each other.

Is it that desire,

seeing a beautiful house, a lovely garden, if you want,

if you have ever seen a beautiful house

with a lovely garden,

a lawn that is kept beautifully without a single weed,

and you see it, and you say, 'My God, I wish I had it!'

That is becoming. Right?

So what is desire?

You answer that question, please.

So I desire to become successful in various fields

or in the career I have chosen.

I have an object I must have at the end of so many years,

of whatever target you have,

and you strive after it.

If you have not had children, you want children.

It is the same thing – desire.

Right?

The desire to achieve nirvana,

desire to achieve illumination,

desire to go to America

or become a great scientist so that you can win a Nobel Prize,

it is the same movement, the becoming.

So we must enquire not only into one of the facets of becoming,

which is desire, and what is desire?

Now, I have asked that question,

the speaker has asked that question.

It remains there.

It is in the air.

How do you respond to that question?

Or do you leave that question to flower, grow,

see all the implications of it?

You understand?

You have a map in front of you,

a map of this country.

If you have a certain spot or certain town you want to go to,

you disregard the rest of the map.

You have a direction to go to

and you pursue that in the map.

You never look at the whole of the map

because you have only one pursuit,

because you want to be successful,

you want to achieve.

If you don't achieve you are nobody,

you are frightened.

If you call yourself Ph.D.,

your family purrs, delighted.

If you have a Nobel Prize, all the papers throughout the world

– except perhaps behind the Iron Curtain –

publish your name, you become famous, rich.

But it is the same movement

whether your desire is for illumination, enlightenment,

or for the Nobel Prize,

or to be a rich man in a potty little town.

Right, sir?

So we are asking, what is desire?

If one can understand that,

not suppress it, not control it,

not try to transcend it,

like a monk who has a desire only for God,

whatever God that may be,

and it is the desire to achieve that kingdom that drives him.

He still has the fire of desire

as you have.

So what is desire?

Find out, sir. I have put the question.

How do you respond to that question?

Probably you have never even thought about it,

you probably never even

– I am saying this most respectfully –

you never even investigated it.

If you have desire you want to fulfil it,

with all the problems involved in it.

If you are a slightly moral person,

you say, I mustn't have that desire, you suppress it.

The monks throughout the world have suppressed desires

but only identified that desire with a figure,

a symbol, an idea, a principle.

But it is still desire.

So let us ask,

the speaker is asking you: what is desire?

Don't quote me,

because then you haven't understood if you quote somebody else.

The speaker has talked a great deal about desire

and some of you may have read those books,

and the word is not the fact,

what you read is not what you are.

So what is more important is what you are.

So, to come back, what is desire?

And why is it

it has become so extraordinarily vital in our life?

Questioner: Is it I want a meaning to my life?

K: Beg your pardon? Q: Is it that

I want a meaning to my life that I have a desire?

Q: She said that, I want a meaning to my life.

K: So you want a meaning to life.

Which means you have no meaning to life.

Right?

You have no meaning, life has no meaning,

therefore you try to give, intellectually or another way,

to give a meaning to life.

So, if you give a meaning to life, it is not life.

If you want to give a significance to that tree

then you don't know the beauty of the tree.

If you want to give significance to your empty life

– you may be married, children, all the rest of the business,

and you find when you are about forty, fifty, sixty,

life has no meaning,

then you try to give meaning to it,

by going to the temple, literature,

playing the violin, painting,

anything to escape from what you are.

Right, sirs?

You are talking about your life,

not theories,

not what other people have said.

So what is desire?

Come on, sir, look at it.

We live by sensation,

and sensations are the responses of our senses,

and we use only one or two senses,

eyesight or hearing.

Sensation is our way.

One must have sensations otherwise you are paralysed,

as most of you are.

Paralysed in a country

that is going down the hill,

paralysed by your gods, by your philosophy,

by your way of life.

I am not criticising, these are facts.

So unless you are totally paralysed

you have the movement of sensation,

senses are operating.

When you look at that tree

and the beauty of light among the leaves,

there is a response, there is a sensation.

Right?

When you see a beautiful woman you have sensations.

When you see a very, very clever man,

as most of you are

– you are a very clever people,

too clever by half,

you have explanation for everything,

you are good at analysis, explanations.

Those analyses, explanations,

quotations have nothing to do with your daily life,

so there is a wide gap between your theories,

religious concepts, philosophical knowledge,

has nothing whatever to do with your daily living,

and that is why you are all living a life that has no meaning.

So let's proceed. What is desire?

How does desire arise?

What is the relationship between desire and thought?

Go slowly. I am asking all these questions.

Who is the controller who controls desire?

And why all religions

say you mustn't have desire

– more or less, in different terminologies.

So unless we understand very deeply the activity of desire,

not the objects of desire,

not the objects of desire but desire itself.

A child may want to be an engine driver

or he may want to be a first-class pianist,

but it is still desire, and so on.

We are not concerned with the objects of desire

but desire itself.

Right?

Q: Desire and survival are inseparable.

K: Desire and survival are inseparable.

What is it to survive? What does it mean to survive?

Survive physically?

If you want to survive physically and be secure physically

you must have no nationalities,

because tribalism, which is glorified nationalism,

is destroying the world.

Right?

Ideals, ideologies of Russia

and the ideologies of the democratic world

are destroying humanity.

So there is no security. You are not surviving.

The danger is there but you are blind to it

because you say nationalism is security.

So security, survival, has a meaning only

when you don't belong to any country,

to any group, to any religion.

Then you are a strong person

both biologically as well as psychologically.

You are a free human being

and you might help to prevent the stupidities of politicians

and the voters.

So let's proceed. What is desire?

What is the origin, the beginning of desire?

I see you.

There is the seeing

of the colour of that sari or that shirt,

the seeing with the eye, visual perception,

and there is a sensation,

which is: I don't like that colour but I like that colour.

You are following this?

Seeing, from which arises a sensation,

then I contact the sari or the shirt,

contact in the sense touch it,

sensation, contact,

and from that contact greater sensation.

Which is, I see a beautiful shirt in the window

or a sari or whatever you want,

seeing then going inside and touching the material

and from that touching greater sensation.

Right? You are following this?

Don't you do this ordinarily in your daily life?

Q: Yes.

K: That is what you are doing

– seeing, contact and greater sensation.

Now, what happens after that?

No, I am asking you the question – think it out.

Sir, think it out, go into it carefully.

I see that beautiful house.

The seeing creates a sensation.

If I am a friend of that house

I go inside, look at the walls, look at the shape of the windows.

All that is a sensation.

Then what takes place?

Q: I want to have it. K: Yes, that is sensation.

K: I am asking

– please do pay a little attention if you are interested in it.

We must have sensations,

otherwise you are biologically, physically paralysed.

If your arm doesn't feel

then that arm is paralysed.

So there must be sensation.

That is a natural, healthy state.

If I ask you a question and if you are actively mentally aware

you respond to it.

But if you are tired, sleepy, lazy,

or burdened with philosophy,

burdened with other people's sayings,

then you can't respond.

You will say what other people have said.

So there is the seeing, contact, sensation.

This is natural, healthy.

Then what takes place?

It is all so rapid, so instantaneous,

so we are slowing it down.

Then what takes place?

Q: The sensation is registered in the brain.

K: Yes sir, Of course. Then what?

Don't go into great explanations.

We have made a very simple statement.

Q: But after, that brain is refreshed.

K: No sir, just look at it before you answer it.

I must go on otherwise you will throw lots of words at me.

I see that house,

the seeing, touching the marble,

looking at the pillars,

looking at the good windows,

and that is sensation.

Then what takes place?

Then thought comes in and says,

'How nice it would be if I had that house.'

See what takes place.

Then thought uses the sensation.

And thought is also another sensation.

Thought creates the image,

my image that I must have that house.

That is, sensation, then thought instantly

creates the image of me living in that house.

Have you understood it?

Have you understood something?

That is, thought takes charge of the sensation

and out of that sensation create the image,

and the image is owning that house

or that car or that something or other.

You have followed this?

So, watch it carefully.

Sensation is healthy, normal,

then thought comes along and says,

out of that sensation creates the image.

And when thought shapes the sensation,

at that second desire is born.

Don't agree,

don't say, yes, that is a good explanation.

Now, if you don't shake your head in agreement

then why are you a slave to desires?

Right?

You are too quick to agree with anything that is said.

But I am pointing out most respectfully

that we are always trained to control, suppress, transcend,

escape in various forms from desire.

Have you noticed the sannyasis in this country

and the monks in Europe, especially in Italy?

They are walking down the street and they have the Bible

and never look around because of temptation.

So, book.

And the sannyasis in this country,

I have followed many of them, behind them,

they are chanting something or other,

never look at the beauty of the earth,

the flowers, the streams, the sky, the passing woman

– but, 'don't be tempted.' Right?

So, I am asking you a question:

sensation is right, natural, healthy.

Can thought not interfere?

When thought takes charge of sensation,

at that second desire is born.

You understand this?

Sensation is natural, and a gap when thought doesn't interfere.

You understand what I am saying?

So can thought abstain for a few seconds?

That means tremendous awareness,

great attention.

Don't say: what is attention, what is awareness,

go off into some explanation.

To see sensation is natural,

and discover for yourself

that the moment thought takes charge of the sensation,

at that second desire is born

– I want that house or that woman or that something or other.

Right?

To be aware,

to pay attention so that thought doesn't take charge of sensation.

That is timeless. I won't go into all that.

You have never thought about all this.

you are all grown-up people.

You have ashes on your head, go to temples,

and all kinds of childish stuff,

and you haven't even gone into yourself,

you have never even thought to ask these questions.

So, discipline is not the end of desire.

Discipline itself becomes desire.

Right?

But if you learn what is desire, learn,

not from the speaker, from yourself,

understand, investigate, go into it,

then it is yours, you are learning.

There was a great Spanish painter.

He was 95 or more or less – Goya –

he said, 'I am still learning.' You understand?

So learning is everlasting

but knowledge is not,

knowledge is limited, finite.

But you are learning.

So if one learns,

not learn about desire

but if you are learning the meaning of desire,

what is involved in it, how it arises, keep on learning,

then that very learning brings its own discipline.

If you want to be a good chemist, good biologist,

that very subject becomes the means of training,

of discipline.

You don't know any of these things.

Where do you all live?

Not in Triplicane, Madras or around here

– where do you live?

If life has no meaning

and all the temples are full of things

made by hand and by the mind,

which you are worshipping,

all this has no meaning at all anymore.

So please ask this question of yourself:

why life, which is an extraordinary thing,

great complexity, great depth and great beauty,

why that life has become so shoddy.

PS 111 - Lioy - W19 - week 2 - 2nd - Duration: 12:53.

okay so with two video number two this

is very interesting so this is you're

gonna get a snippet of the way that I

think in particular and in general. When

I do this kind of examples and stuff in

class students tend to like it so we'll

see how it comes out recorded online

okay? So the chapter finishes talking

about environmentalism and political

Islam OK? So, I disagree with the book

why do I disagree? I disagree because in

my opinion after you have a presentation

of ideologies of the left and the right

you have liberalism conservatism fascism

communism socialism okay? You should not

have environmentalism and political Islam

why? Because they are not comprehensive

ideologies but they are only part of the

ideology ideological sphere they are

pieces that then you can combine with

the other ideologies but they are not

ideologies that stand on their own two

feet! They are not complete ideologies!

okay

Environmentalism for example can be used

both by the left and by the right okay

and it's the same thing about political

Islam. There is not one brand of

political Islam okay the book tries to

convince you, you know, that there's a

certain radical way of political Islam

and that you know that's the way the

political Islam that we should be

thinking about.

But hey also be careful because not all

people, not all people who belong to them

Muslim world adhere to those ideas.

Which is like saying hey let's give you

a presentation of the craziest wing of

the Democratic Party or of the

Republican Party in America, the crazies

crazies crazies... and then it tells you

yeah but "in any case most of most people

in America don't think like that"

Actually and so I'm like okay if most

people don't think like that

why are you making me think that that's

the ideology okay that's what I find

very problematic in this case okay and

it's the same thing about

environmentalism going back to

environmentalism. Environmentalism says

that we have that before we do something

else we need to take care of the

environment okay but it's not like the

environment is the only issue that there

is okay? If you have a government you're

gonna have a secretary to the

environment or a secretary to the

Environment Protection Agency, in every

country in the world okay? But there are

many ways that we can look at

environmentalism there are some people

that just say oh all we need to do to

fix the environment is to do

technological change we should do

incentives to have more like solar

panels and Tesla cars and windmills you

know wind turbines like we have in

Eastern Washington in Eastern Oregon and

then you have people on the left that

say no it's actually that we have to fix

poverty we have to fix inequality to fix

the environment because you know it's

just that poor people don't know any

better or like poor countries don't know

any better and so they like burn coal

and you have to fix this kind of stuff

before you fix the environment okay and

so it's actually I'm not saying that

environmentalism is not interesting I'm

just saying that it's confusing to have

it in the same chapter of other

ideologies in my opinion it should be in

a chapter that talks about different

political issues you could have

immigration you could have environment

the environment of course... you could have

unemployment for example okay and these

are all different political issues but

because of the fact that the environment

has been kept aside for a long time and

it's kind of a new subject. Now we're all

very aware of global warming and stuff

like that that, then it makes it look as

if it was its own ideology, but in my

opinion it's not, OK? and it's not like

it means the book isn't right, we are

allowed to have disagreement about these

kind of things and so

I think that it's important for you to

see me give you this example because you

might also have disagreements of this

kind OK?

And finishing about political Islam what

do you have to understand in that

Islamic societies you're gonna have

liberals and conservatives surprise

surprise okay? You're gonna have people

that just like the American religious

right, think that because of the fact

that in their opinion life is sacred

then everybody should be pro-life, and

it's the same thing for political Islam

okay? And but I don't think that there is

anything to gain about only presenting

the most extreme version of of an

ideology because that's not the way that

we can understand it at its best okay?

And also like the martyrs of what we

know in the West as the jihad, are not

any different from any other kind of

terrorist. Terrorism is like the most

extreme form of political action and do

you know who, so it's silly to ask

questions in video, so one of my favorite

one of my favorite political facts about

terrorism which blew my mind was when I

learned some 10 or 15 years ago that

most of the terrorist techniques that

were taken by Islamic terrorists like in

the 1980s into 2000s were actually taken

from the IRA which was the Irish

Republican Army that was fighting the

British government in the 70s the 80s

and the 90s and and that got a lot of

people killed, and those were extreme

nationalist terrorists and they were

Catholic and Republican and Democratic

from Ireland...

So attributing, not talking about

terrorism for a whole chapter, and then

only talking about terrorism when you

talk about political Islam, you see where

the problem lies,

that it makes it sound as if terrorism

only existed in political Islam, but if

you look at history terrorism has

existed in many different forms and for

example in the U.S. in the seventies

you've had far left terrorists

I don't know if any of you now you

should look "bombs on campus in Eugene in

1969 1970" my building PLC Prince Lucian

Campbell Hall there was a bomb put in

the basement of the building that cost

fifty thousand dollars of damage. They

were lucky that no one died and they

were associated with far left terrorism

okay so we have to try to put things in

a broader perspective and we have to try

not to be confused and and to know the

facts and to know that the things are

more complex than they might seem at

first sight okay? And what is the reason

why there is such a big problem with

political Islam and it's all because of

the fact, of course of 9/11, which is a

watershed event in the history of

American politics okay?

And American foreign politics, but it's

not the only accident of terrorism in

our history okay? So we have to be able

to put things in perspective. Now, the

last part of our chapter deals with the

10 principles oppose of conservatism the

readin of our chapter of our

week ok the readings that that we have

seen so far were organized in a certain

way from the book this is the first time

that we use some reading from the

outside why do we look at the time

principles of conservatism, because I

want you to to be able to look at a

certain ideology in more detail ok? So

you might wonder why I assigned you

conservatism I think that it's because

it's not talked about very much and I

think you might be more familiar with

other ideologies okay?

And also because I feel that right now

we have to be able to understand which

elements of a certain ideology are

compatible with other, with other

ideologies okay? And you have to be able

to see what parts of an ideology you

agree with the more parts of an ideology

you disagree disagree with okay? You've

already seen from the book that

conservatism is about small government

and traditions

and that he hates the idea of fast

change okay I assigned this little

reading from 1993 by Russell Kirk not

because it's perfect,

but because it touches on many different

aspects okay? And it shows you that

ideologies are complex beasts ok complex

animals, and they're way too often they

are oversimplified. Ok at the beginning

Kirk himself says that conservatism is

not an ideology ok I disagree, but what

is he getting at there? He's getting at

the fact that conservatism is more

complex than we think ok? Which is a very

good point ok so the 10 ideas I'm not

going to go into detail on all of them

but number one is the idea that

society has to be rooted in a moral

order, so moral order that it's rooted in

our conscience ok number 2 custom

convention continuity the idea is that

conservative prefer the kind of

society that they know to a kind of

society that they don't know okay? Number

three principle of prescription the idea

is that tradition is good

individuals are stupid and in humanities

wise this means relying on precedent on

the way things were done before but also

very interesting he uses the word

relying on prejudice okay? So you hear

prejudice against a group of people the

prejudice is going to be slow to change

okay? And then number four principle of

prudence okay? The idea is that you have

to be prudent you have not to make brisk

choices and stuff and I think that by

now with the idea of custom, tradition

prescription, prudence, I think that you

understand why it is that people say

that you are more leftist, when you're

young and you're more conservative when

you're all because when you're young you

want to change things fast and so young

people are naturally more revolutionary

and so that's why it's hard to it's

harder to be young and conservative in

even if I'm not saying but most

young people are prone not to be

conservative because young people are

impatient young people want things to

change

now! And conservatism is rooted in a

principle of prudence of tradition okay?

so you can see this tension...and then,

it's conservatism Kirk says is routing

the number five principle of variety

okay the idea is that differences are

positive okay? And this is not so much

differences in terms of like ethnic

differences racial differences and stuff,

like that but differences between the

rich and the poor so it's basically

anti-tax and it's basically saying that

the only form of equality that matters

is equality in front of the law okay?

Then imperfectability which means that

perfection doesn't exist and that you

shouldn't be looking for utopia okay? And

then freedom and property are linked to

each other which is again the idea that

you shouldn't violate property and that

you shouldn't have high taxes. Then you

have the idea that community counts so

this is the importance of federalism,

this is the importance of local

government of having powerful local

government in each community decide on

their own. And then nine is the idea of

checks of checks and balances

conservatives are against powerful

presidents and they are against anarchy

so against chaos okay? and then

permanence and progression must be

reconciled so it basically says we know

that some change needs to happen over

time because otherwise we stagnate, but

that every change should be weighed with

prudence okay so these are the readings

for this week I will record one small

video about how to do the the first

writing and good luck to you all and I'm

looking forward to reading your comments

on Canvas.

How to stop OCD thoughts - Online Mindfulness Therapy - Duration: 12:04.

Welcome.

My name is Peter Strong.

I'm a professional psychotherapist based in Boulder, Colorado and I offer online therapy

via Skype for the treatment of anxiety and depression and addictions and many other common

psychological problems that respond well to mindfulness-based therapy.

Mindfulness Therapy is my preferred choice because I find it to be vastly superior to

conventional talk therapy and certainly a great improvement over medications, which

really do nothing to change the underlying cause of your emotional suffering.

So anxiety disorders are the most common condition that I work with and this includes obsessive-compulsive

disorder, and I'm often asked how to stop OCD thoughts, how to break free from those

intrusive thoughts that cause so much emotional suffering and anxiety for a lot of people.

So working with intrusive thoughts.

First of all we have to ask what is it that makes them intrusive?

How does this work?

Well there's four major factors that I have identified that really cause a thought to

become intrusive.

The first is the emotional charge of the thoughts.

So with all OCD thoughts it's not the content of the thought thought, it's not the narrative

that's really that important.

What is important is the emotional charge of that thought.

When a thought has a very high emotional charge then it tends to stay in the mind longer and

it tends to return more frequently than a thought with a low emotional charge.

So the emotional charge is what gives the stickiness to intrusive thoughts and leads

to obsessive behaviors based on those intrusive thoughts.

So working with that emotional charge and learning how to neutralize it is essential,

and much more important than trying to change the narrative, or your beliefs, or trying

to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts, or any other cognitive manipulation

like that, because it really won't work if that emotional charge is not first neutralized.

So working with the emotional charge of the thoughts is very important.

The second factor that causes those thoughts to be intrusive is really just plain habit.

That is, the lack of conscious awareness.

We tend to simply identify with these thoughts when they arrive and we get caught up in them

and we start trying to fight them or resist them in some way.

So this process of pure habit operates when there is very little consciousness.

Like any habit it operates unconsciously.

So developing much more consciousness around our OCD thoughts is very important, and in

fact we learn how to meditate on those thoughts rather than trying to make them go away, which

is not practical or trying to resist them in some other way or distract ourselves from

those thoughts.

Any kind of effort to try and remove thoughts by distraction just won't work.

We have to completely change our relationship to those thoughts.

We have to, in fact, create more consciousness, not less.

The third factor that causes thoughts to become intrusive is really just the problem of what

I call reactive identification, and that is where we really become consumed by that thought;

we take on the identity of the thought.

We take it to be who we are.

We take it as the truth of things and we simply blindly fall into that thought.

The fourth factor that's closely related to reactive identification is general reactivity

to those unpleasant emotionally charged thoughts.

As I mentioned earlier we tend to try to escape or avoid unpleasant experiences, including

thoughts.

We try to avoid them or we react with self-hatred, aversion or extreme dislike for those thoughts,

which is understandable because they cause so much pain for us.

But unfortunately reactivity simply feeds the problem.

So avoidance and aversion are big problems with OCD thoughts and we have to overcome

both.

And again, we do this by actually developing more mindful conscious awareness around those

thoughts.

We learn to meditate on the thoughts.

Many people find this very strange indeed.

But this is from my experience; this is what I find to be effective.

When people start changing their relationship to the thoughts from one of avoidance and

aversion to one of meditating on those thoughts, bringing consciousness to those thoughts and

actually bringing a quality of compassion and friendliness or openness to those thoughts,

then change starts to happen quite quickly.

So that's part of the the Mindfulness Therapy that I teach for OCD but another part is really

quite interesting and not familiar to most people.

But again, something I have discovered over the years of working with anxiety disorders

like OCD is working with the imagery of those intrusive thoughts.

So because they have a strong emotional challenge that emotional charge is produced by internal

psychological imagery that gets activated by that thoughts, and, in fact, the best way

to heal and neutralize that emotional charge, besides not identifying with it or reacting

against it is to change the imagery of the emotion that's associated with the thought.

So most intrusive thoughts are associated with some form of fear or some form of extreme

trauma for example.

That's very common.

So intrusive thoughts are very common in people suffering from PTSD or other form of trauma.

Working with the imagery is a very good way indeed to neutralize these traumatic thoughts.

Classically some of the things I will teach you is how to identify that imagery and then

how to change it.

And very typically the first thing you might do is find a way to change the position of

the imagery.

Where you see it and the mind is a huge part of what causes the intensity of that intrusive

thought.

So typically the thought is too big and too close and usually too high in our visual,

psychological field, so changing it's position is quite important.

And in general trying to turn the thought and it's emotion into an object is also very,

very important, which becomes very easy when you can start to create imagery, or find the

imagery that describes that emotion.

When you can turn it into an object then you can begin to develop a relationship that is

conscious and friendly but non-reactive towards the object.

That's much easier to do than when we become identified with the thoughts.

So there are lots and lots of different ways of working with the imagery of OCD thoughts,

but those are two: we might try to change his position and then see it as an object

and then interact with that object in various ways to help it change its emotional charge.

Make it smaller for example, a very a classic type of intervention we can explore together.

If you make a thought smaller it will have a smaller emotional charge, it won't be so

intense, it won't be so overpowering.

So if you would like to learn more about how to work with intrusive thoughts and OCD thoughts

in general, please contact me.

Send me an email.
