with the growing popularity of ultra running of the last several years
chances are if your runner you may have looked into running an ultra marathon
and thought there is absolutely no way I could run 50 miles or a hundred miles
that's insane believe me if I hear the joke that I
don't even like to drive that far or you're gonna cripple yourself I'm gonna
so with people like Dean Carr Nasus at caballo Blanco and Scott jerk become a
mainstream for all of the extraordinary feats that they were accomplishing when
ultra running started really getting big I decided to pick up ultra marathon man
and born to run and ultimately those books are what inspired me to take on
running 50 miles myself and definitely after reading those books I was hooked
and I was absolutely determined to run an ultra marathon and I'm here to tell
you that if I can run 50 miles you can too welcome back everyone this is
motivation Theory my name is John and today I'm gonna be talking to you about
how anyone can run an ultra marathon but first if you are new here this channel
is for inspiration is for motivation it's for those of you looking for
like-minded people out here on the Internet and if that sounds like your

now arguably the first standard ultra distance in a race is 50k or just over
31 miles don't get people started on any chat rooms about whether whether a 31
mile or is an ultramarathon it'll just blow up believe me and trust me on that
one so the typical distances are 50 K 50
mile 100 K and hundred miles and 24-hour races so where do altra marathons take
place well the trains and distances have
organized ultra events very enormous ly and because of this so do the difficulty
you could have very long flat races or stream ly hilly lots of climbing you
don't want those they fry you but they're fun why should you not be scared
of running an ultra I know a lot of people are scared I've heard this quite
a bit they start looking up everything in the world about what can happen to
you and it'll be out there but just ignore it mentally you're achievable
distance is just relative to what you've run before so if you've only run short
distances longer distances are really gonna bother you so you only run ten
miles running fifty seems like a lot so if you run multiple marathons it gets a
little bit closer and closer you start to chip away mentally about what is
extremely far 50 miles is far but it doesn't seem unattainable to me because
I've run it many times now and most people start to equate running something
like a half marathon and marathon the speed wise to an ultra you know most
time limits for the 50-mile race is around 12 to 13 hours is usually to cut
off ultra runners are not superhuman they have just become really good at
running slowly for a very long time they become super mentally tough because to
be honest these races are mostly mental they've learned how to manage things
like nutrition and their hydration for a very long time that becomes the big big
challenge when you start running ultras who runs ultras where do you find these
crazy people to run these ridiculously stupid distances statistically the
average age to run an ultra marathon for the first time was 36 and that held for
many many decades the second most common age to do an ultra for the first time
was 40 and the average participant was 43 over 10% of the participants were
over 55 oh when they ran their first race so how can you run an ultra
marathon you want to slowly build up your long run building your base and
lessening the difference between the race distance and what you know you can
do so running those long distances all the time
you build confidence to get your body ready to take on the hours on your feet
you really need to engage your mental toughness I can't stress this enough you
need to strengthen your mind it's like a muscle you need to get tough you need to
be able to battle through pretty much anything nutritional nausea sore feet
legs feel like they're gonna fall off just your mind telling your body to shut
down and you still have to push through that and you need to learn to slow down
this is not a marathon it's not a half a marathon you're gonna have to slow down
unless you're dissin on and recovery is so underrated you really need to take
care of yourself and heal recovery is just as important as getting as long
miles in but is running ultra marathons safe baseline statistics indicate that
ultra runners are healthier on average than the u.s. population participants
miss just an average of two days of work because of their illness or injury
compared to four days for the general population and about 64 percent of
visits to health care professionals were for exercise related injuries not for
diseases that would indicate chronic deterioration our knees are not falling
apart or not crippling ourselves I don't want to hear it anymore so what are the
benefits of running ultra marathons so there are so many benefits I could go on
and on and on for days ultras are simply about personal achievement camaraderie
beauty in the pain and crossing the finish line look generally ultras take
place in beautiful places and locations on spectacular trails and with very
friendly like-minded people who will support you rather than race you so it's
it's not like you're in your running and you feel like the person actually is
gonna be passing you I've made so many friends out on the trails
I have run with so many people got to know so many people over the years it
really really brings a new perspective to what you think is normal a normal
athlete I have met people that do not look like they could run five miles much
less 50 and they can blow past me ultras push you further than you ever thought
you could be pushed they change you I've talked about this before in some of my
blogs and videos it changes you as a person I am not the same person I was
before the first time I ran an ultra marathon there is nothing that I don't
think I can do and that's all from the confidence I've built through running
ultra marathons I've pushed myself to the breaking point I've pushed myself to
the point where I didn't think I could take another step that I thought I was
to not make it and I pushed through it when you put yourself through something
like that it changes you and I implore you please do the research please
prepare yourself for one of the most beautiful painful things you'll ever go
through in your life I will tell every single person that
ever asked me should I run an ultra marathon I will say yes without question
as long as you prepare as long as you understand what you're putting yourself
into it will change you and I have not met one ultra marathoner that I don't
like it is a it's an awesome group of people and I don't know how to explain
it until you've been to a race and you've met them so if you're thinking
