Hi guys I'm Shelly welcome back to my channel, and the first Hormone Diaries of 2019
Though it's, you know, quite a while in by now, but hey.
So where are we with this Hormone Diaries thing?
The last Hormone Diaries video I did. I went for a scan for my Endometrioms, because you know......that's lovely
And...... and I mentioned that it didn't go well, because it didn't!
I was a bit scared about the results. Well the results are in people!
I didn't have to be as scared as I thought I did. It's not cancer.
But basically I was told that my Endometrioma,
which is a cyst on my left ovary.
Haven't grown, they haven't gotten any worse.
But my right ovary is now showing signs of cyst's growing, at some point.
Basically ovaries are squishy, they have eggs in them, and they're all supposed to be ......
you know, kind of moving about and doing their thing.
My right ovary has now stopped moving basically, it's showing signs of the eggs becoming cystic.
So that is what is causing my tremendous amount of pain.
I talked to my doctor, and she gave me options as normal.
Of going onto the pill, which reduces periods and is supposed to reduce the pain and..and stuff like that.
Or surgery to have the cyst on my left ovary removed.
Both of which are not really options that I'm comfortable with.
Having multiple illnesses and multiple issues with medication, I don't want to go on the pill....
Because no thank you!
Also the surgery will include obviously having anaesthetic,
and there is yet to be found an anaesthetic that works on me, due to other chronic illnesses.
So I have decided to carry on with mind numbing pain every single month...
Yes, and so on that note..... I found a thing.
And it's sort of blown my tiny little mind .
On Twitter and Instagram for a while. There has been some promotion of something called BeYou.
Which is a pain strip. It's a little strip that's supposed to release things that stop period pains.
I think like most people, you look at it and just go..... ' Are you actually kidding me?'
You're just like, 'Hey get away with you, this is a scam'
My pain had gotten so bad that I thought okay, I'm gonna go on the website and have a little look.
I did some research and I found out that they do a trial pack.
You don't have to sign into any subscriptions. You don't have to give all your money over.
You could just buy one pack, and have a little test.
So if it was a scam, it wasn't very good scam.
I ordered them and they came and they come in a pack like this.
The envelope is just a plain white envelope, you can't tell what's in it.
So the idea of these strips, you get a pack of 5.
And they're supposed to give you 12 hours pain relief, wherever you put it.
They're full of natural ingredients and they're fast-acting.
The main ingredients of them, being menthol and eucalyptus.
So this is why I thought it was just like a scam.
How can Eucalyptus and Menthol really work?
I did a live review on Instagram as I tried them for the first time.
I will leave a link to that down below, because I saved the story.
So this is basically a more refined version of that.
So when you open them you get 5 strips, like this.
It sort of looks like elastoplast, with the backing like that.
Not very big very, very discreet. It's not elastoplast, it's much, much smoother.
It's just kind of, literally you can do that it's quite.....it's quite nice.
I can smell it from here!
It's very, very strong menthol smell, like really strong cough drops.
You just stick it on your lower abdomen, sort of between your pelvic bones,
or higher up depending on where your pain is.
Now bearing in mind I have Endometrioma and Endometriosis,
so along with my period pain I have the Endometrioma pain.
So I was not expecting it to even touch it to be honest.
Because I've got like, 'bunched up in a ball crying' pain.
I put it on, and within about 10 to 15 minutes, I get this tingly feeling.
So a bit like when you put, if you ever tried peppermint cream?
You put it on your feet and it cools and it tingles?
It feels like that, when you stick it on your stomach.
And somehow the tingling cuts through the pain, it's like the nerves are just so confused.
Because they're now tingling, instead of cramping in pain.
That it can confuse all the senses in your stomach.....
That's not the right words, I'm not using the right English for this.
But it just confuses your stomach and your pain enough,
that the pain eases off so much, so fast.
I was in shock, I was just....
Am i making this up? Has my brain just gone, 'I want this to work so much that I'm gonna make it work'?
Sometimes, you know I will admit, that that could possibly be happening.
But I was so skeptical about this, and so expecting it not to work.
I'm just like..... this is actually, is this working? I am so confused right now!
Literally my Instagram story, is just me going. What is going on?
And I kept this on for 12 hours. When I took it off I did have some skin reaction.
Because bearing in mind I have super sensitive skin.
But you kind of expect that anyway, when you take off a plaster you get a bit of redness, and it went down really fast.
I don't think it lasted the whole 12 hours, I know after 6, I definitely felt the pain kick up a level.
But again, that could be the chronic illnesses, that could be my endometrioma.
This is based.. and it's supposed to work on period pain only.
I don't think it's supposed to work on all my other issues...
I've tried it again since, just to see if it was a fluke. And no, it's still working.
It smells heavily of Eucalyptus, and like the second you open packet you can..... it hits you.
And I will admit a downside is that, you smell a eucalyptus once you put it on.
And your clothes smell of eucalyptus after you take them off,
or if you've been wearing it throughout the day, you will have eucalyptus smell on your clothes.
So you may have to put it in the wash.
If you're a person who doesn't like to bring attention to their period?
Who is very quiet about it?
Wearing this won't....... nobody is going to come up to you go,
'Excuse me, you really smell of menthol'
It's not really... really noticeable. You notice it, because you get a waft now and again, and again your clothes.
It's sort of like wearing perfume, and it's just, it just lingers in the background a little bit.
So if you're somebody who doesn't like the smell of menthol, I guess you would have a problem with this.
What I love about this company, is on the back of the leaflet that you get.
It's promoting period positivity!

Their customer service is brilliant!
I had a little conversation with the company because they saw my Instagram story,
and the fact that I was reviewing this.
So they emailed me, asking me if I had any had questions or I wanted to know anything else?
I was genuinely interested as to how this came about.
How they they found this?
It turns out that the company came up with this because one of their co-founders, Kru
Was not allowed to take a hot water bottle into work for her period pain.
Which is just ridiculous!
They thought it was unprofessional to sit at a desk with a hot water bottle ,to kill period pain.
But at the same time, the men in her office.
Were allowed to come in with heat patches, and cool patches and everything, for sports injuries.
Kru's brother was so angry about this, that they co-founded BeYou together.
Not enough time and research has been put into periods, and these two people went out on their own.
And this is how it's happening, this is how painkillers and and MoonCups and things like that, are happening for periods.
Because people are getting so fed up with the fact that healthcare, administration's and companies are not looking into it, not helping it.
The pads are so expensive, and so on and so forth......
This is my jam, this is my rant, this is what I'm angry about.
And they are angry about it too.
So I love this company, just for the positivity about periods, and the fact that they are behind it.
The fact that they are pushing for openness with periods, and pushing the conversation forward.
But yeah, I genuinely thought this was a scam, and then I tried it.
And now I'm a convert. I don't know if I'm gonna be able to use it forever,
because my body will build up a sensitivity to it possibly, I don't know.
But for somebody who has an Endometioma and Endometriosis and severe ovulation pain once a month.
I cannot tell you how happy I am with this product.
So yeah, I will leave links to them down below.
Again this isn't an AD, but I'm just.....
I'm just very, very happy and I wanted to share this with you.
Because if I could share a painkiller that actually flippin works, you know. That's something.

Why the world isn't nearly as good as you think – a comment on Hans Rosling - Duration: 12:01.
Hello,
You might have heard that the world is steadily becoming better and better.
That the annual number of war casualties has plummeted 90% during the last 70 years.
Or that global child mortality has seen a tenfold decrease since the beginning of the 19th century.
You might also have seen visualizations like this one,
with the per capita income along this axis, life expectancy along this axis,
and all the different nations represented by bubbles where colour and size mirror the continents
and the number of inhabitants, and you might have seen how all nations during the last two centuries
have enjoyed an ever increasing lifespan and more earnings to buy things.
What you've seen is true.
These are facts that can't be denied and they do say something important about the world.
Today, however, they are being used for propaganda purposes,
to justify the existing state of affairs and hail western capitalism as the ideal society.
Both politicians and scientists do this,
and they do it by emphasizing some facts to the extreme, while completely ignoring other facts.
Take a look at these bubbles for instance.
Is this really what the world looks like?
Look at the US, at all its inhabitants neatly packed in this small little bubble.
Why is it so small?
Because it represents the mean values of income and lifespan, not reality.
In reality, all national income is unequally distributed.
So among the bottom half of the American population, the average income is 16,200 dollars per year,
much lower than the national average.
For this half of the US, income has remained roughly the same for four decades.
So why does the national average income increase?
To understand, we have to look at the entire distribution, up to the top one percent.
And to do that, we have zoom out a bit…
Among the American top one percent, the average income is 1.3 million dollars.
Now listen carefully.
Since the share of all national income going to the top one percent is almost twice as large
as the share going to the bottom half of the population,
whatever happens up there has a huge impact on the national average.
And so, during the last 35 years, the top one percent has more than tripled its income,
while the poorer half of the population has remained just as poor.
Thats why, national averages can be so misleading.
Inequalities like this, affect, how long people live.
An American woman belonging to the top one percent has an average life expectancy of 89 years,
whereas an American man belonging the bottom one percent, has an average life expectancy of 73 years
about the same as in Bangladesh.
Mind the gap? Yes, there you have a gap at about 16 years, and the US is not that exceptional in this respect.
If we zoom in on Sweden where I come from, a relatively egalitarian society, you can take the Stockholm tube
from the highly educated inhabitants of Danderyd, to the less educated inhabitants of Vårby Gård.
This trip will only take a few minutes, but when you arrive, life expectancy will have dropped 18 years.
All this is going on beneath the national averages. But even if we look at national averages, it is far from evident that
industrial capitalism produces better and better living conditions into infinity.
If we look at the UK and US for instance, average life expectancy has actually gone down during recent years.
Not because the rich are dying earlier, of course.
What we see is an increase in so called deaths of despair, that is deaths caused by:
suicide, alcohol, and drug overdoses
Despair you might ask?
Yes, that's something else that is rarely mentioned whenever the health benefits of economic growth are promoted.
Have you ever heard any of these advocates of capitalism talk about mental health?
After all, looking at the entire world, the leading cause of ill health today is not a physical illness, but depression.
About a tenth of the global population suffer from it.
And all in all, so-called mental disorders account for about a third of disability worldwide.
So why would anyone interested in global health, want to ignore, this particular type of suffering?
Here's why.
This is the world of depression.
The redder a country is, the more its inhabitants are suffering from depressive disorders.
As you can tell, the most depressed populations can be found in Europe, Australia and the US.
This is the world of anxiety.
Here you see the same pattern, lots of anxiety disorders in the Americas, Europe and Australia.
Not so much anxiety in Africa and Asia.
Strange, isn't it?
It looks as if the richer a nation is, the more problems it has with people being anxious and depressed.
But wasn't economic growth supposed to save us from our misery?
Now, I'm going to show you,
all the eating disorders in the world, all the anxiety disorders, all bipolar disorders, all depressive disorders,
all drug use disorders, all alcohol use disorders,
and all the schizophrenia.
This is how the burden of disease, that is how much people are suffering, is distributed
among high-income nations, upper-middle-income nations, lower-middle-income nations, and low-income nations.
Yes, the richer a nation is, the more its inhabitants are likely to suffer.
And there you have it.
The reason why so few talk about the global distribution of mental illness is because the pattern
doesn't fit into the notion of economic growth as a panacea to all human problems.
Nor does it fit the notion that the world is becoming better and better.
During the last 25 years, both poor and rich are actually suffering more and more.
You can measure this in several ways, but it doesn't matter whether you look at medical records
or ask people about symptoms in national surveys.
Or if you consider the consumption of antidepressants, which in the so-called developed nations belonging to OECD
has doubled in only 15 years.
All numbers point in the same direction.
That doesn't mean that economic growth necessarily makes us unhappy.
No, it can definitely make us happier when some material necessities in life are satisfied.
But once the growth reaches a certain level, its effect on our well-being tends to weaken.
If we look at the US economic growth since 1972 for instance, it has more than doubled.
Yet according to the most reliable surveys we have, the happiness of americans has remained roughly the same
and even weakened somewhat.
This begs the question why economic growth should be endlessly pursued.
Even more fundamentally, one could also ask if health of any kind if relevant when assessing the merits of a society?
Let's look at these bubbles illustrating the average income and lifespan again.
This time, I've highlighted some of the world's dictatorships.
Look at them, look at the very fast progress they make,
how Singapore outshines all Western nations on both income and lifespan.
What does this tell us?
Do these nations also represent good societies?
Is it more preferable to live in Qatar than in the US where people, on average, are poorer and die earlier?
If we zoom in on China, we see that life expectancy grew spectacularly fast between 1949 and 1976.
This is one of the fastest growths in life expectancy ever registered, contributing to the fact that in less thirty years,
Chinese life expectancy more than doubled.
During this period, China was also governed by Mao Zedong, one of the worst dictators history has ever seen.
What does this tell us?
That Mao's China represented a good society, not counting the Great Famine here in the middle,
where at least 15 million people died in vain?
Does it tell us that it's good to live in authoritarian communism where those who criticize the ruling elite risk their lives?
If not, why is this type of statistical cherry picking acceptable when it comes to demonstrating the benefits of capitalism?
Maybe life expectancy and other health measures are poor indicators of what kind of society we live in?
Maybe we shouldn't only look at a society as it is, but also consider its potential, what it could be?
Regardless of how you see it though, the world isn't only becoming a better place.
In many respects we see the reverse.
I've mentioned mental health problems, but the increase in inequality, housing shortage, and precarisation of the
labour market also deserves our attention.
Pretending as if these problems do not exist is dishonest and a glaring example of poor social science.
These problems can be solved, but they need to be acknowledged.
To exclusively proclaim the perpetual improvement of the world, is not going to help.
Shouldn't we say something about global warming?

South Korea's exports of kimchi rose by 20 percent last year.
Total outbound shipments of the staple spicy dish, in fact, hit an all-time high, with
Japan being its biggest fan.

South Korea's exports of kimchi rose last year to an all-time high of 97-point-5 million
U.S. dollars.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the increase of 20
percent was the biggest since data was first compiled in 2006, and the total amount was
the highest since 2012.
Kimchi exports have fluctuated in recent years.
They fell from 89 million dollars in 2013 to 84 million the following year... and 73
million the year after that.
But since then they've rebounded... from 81 million dollars in 2017... to last year's
all-time high.
The number of countries that import South Korean kimchi have also risen -- five more
added to the list last year for a total of 68.
The biggest importer was Japan, which bought 56 million dollars' worth, an increase of
23 percent on-year.
The ministry said the rise in kimchi exports could have been an effect of the government's
efforts to promote global awareness of kimchi's health benefits.
Last year there was a heatwave in Korea that ruined crops and made kimchi more expensive,
so the ministry said it's significant that shipments increased despite the heat.
It said it will push ahead with more research to improve the quality of kimchi and to sustain
the rising exports.

The clouds will slowly clear into the day with highs marking between 4 and 8 degrees,...
with Seoul rising to 4 degrees, Busan and Jeju at 8 and 7 degrees respectively.
As it warms up though, the fine dust is expected to come back, especially along the western
provinces.
So check the latest conditions before heading outside.
